I have a kryptonite cable and u-lock that I use to secure it when necessary. It's a moderately priced solution that's very effective and really easy to carry around. Those cables are also surprisingly tough, and you won't easily get through them with bolt cutters. Just be sure to lock it TO something immovable. I used to use a disk lock and the last I saw of my old bike was the drag marks on the ground as they took it to the truck or van they used to steal it.

Is it the best, most secure thing out there? Probably not. But if they want your bike, they're gonna get your bike. The goal is to make it hard enough to convince them it's not worth the hassle. If you really want to be safe, and have the cash, look at Lojack or a Blackline gps device.

This question came up recently at the other forum. You can click on the link and read people's comments. Someone else said, "there's nothing you can do to prevent theft. If someone is hell bent on stealing it.. and has the skillz to pull it off."

Make sure you have enough insurance to cover your loss.

I would go with: cable lock to stationary object, disc lock on the rear wheel, and always lock the steering.

My cable lock is 5/8" diameter, plastic coated, Master lock from Home Depot. I have no data on how it ranks in the security field.

I can cut your 5/8" cable in under 5 seconds.

Most thefts are simply 2 or 3 guys pick the bike up, through it in a pickup bed or van, and split. Locked or not, its going.

LoJack is your best protection, an authorized LoJack installer will bury the unit in your air plenum chamber where they a) won't look, and b) would have to remove bodywork and cut things up and hope to find it, if they even expected to find one.

And since the trick is to trigger LoJack as quickly as possible, like while its still being transported, they won't have time to find it before a patrol car or two or three pull them over and block them in, and come at them, guns drawn ready for bear.

My Concours 14 has a stout steering lock, and it won't run without the fob in proximity. So I don't use any other lock, but as soon as I can get it to Frederick MD (closest LoJack authorized installer) its getting LoJack buried in it.

Lojack is only good IF the Police Dept or Sheriff's have the hardware to receive a signal. If you do get one...you need to be sure beforehand that IF you activate the thing...the cops will be able to respond.I doubt anyone is sitting up at night waiting for their bike to be stolen.By the time you find out...probably hours afterwards...that Lojack isn't gonna do much good.If they're REAL pros...they won't be keeping that bike anywhere around.A good motion sensor on the bike(alarm) and pager works very well...along with the heavy cable and case hardened lock secured to something immovable...something they can't lift the whole bike over.Secured to the frame...not the wheels.Only problem I found with those alarms however...they are vulnerable to hacking...meaning...cutting and grounding a wire.A good thief will...well...I'd rather not say.I'll just say..if you have one...and you notice it goes off by itself more and more...you best start checking things out....especially if it suddenly starts disabling the ignition.

What's the first thing a guy does when his alarm goes off?Other than run out there...yup....If you find you're having to do that 'all the time'....it's gonna get old fast...meaning...yup....next thing...your baby's gone.

let us know how much lockjack charge you for a bike, I have it in my truck and I paid $850 at the dealer, mine eats the batteries like crazy (key chain battery), every 3 months I need to install a new battery otherwise It keeps sending me false alerts of the truck being stolen. I Called lockjack and they said it will do that if the battery is low, I'm not sure if I will put it in another vehicle, I think they are asking too much money.

The best way to activate any alarm IMO is with the 'arm/disarm' mode sounds turned off...always.Everytime you mode it..And NEVER tell anyone you have an alarm on your bike.

"I need to install a new battery otherwise It keeps sending me false alerts"....very much like the other scenario....loss of power. That will trigger alerts. It may even be best to leave the alarm mode off as well...silent activation...straight to the pager.
