Gearing
06/06/09 11:45 PM

Okay-so I've "gone and done it"-I switched gearing to 16/43.It's 11:41 PM here right now.I won't ride out and wake the neighbors up.Tomorrow-well,as they say-"here goes nothin'". I really liked the 16/42-gave er that quick pull down low and in the midrange-actually all the way through the rpm range.Any nighttime thoughts from you all about how it will be?Ride safe everyone-Have FUN!!!!(flies out,PCIII).

you all about how it will be?

Blue, all about wrist control now. Banging through 1 to 4 is one hell of Rush. What I like the best, is how fast that speedo wraps. This gearing really tests the riders ability in the 1/4. Look forward to hearing how you liked it or if you liked it. This gear ratio is not for the faint of heart.

Hey All-Ya-NOW she runs like a SPORTBIKE!!WoHoo!!!I'm VERY HAPPY!!Smooth as silk.Shifting is,well, the slickest she's ever been.Everything just feels....right.It's just amazing to me.Shifting up or down is just so much smoother. It's hard to explain-cruising now at 70 or above-there's just NO vibration.Doesn't even feel like she's running!I'm totally stoked.Ride safe all-Enjoy!!!

I think I will be 16/43 by the end of the year. Then maybe bolt on a few inches. Maybe. After that...

Hey Minerman-I guess it could have been-I tried to get that 16t "zephyr" sprocket to go on there-it wasn't gonna fit.The splines were off just enough to not line up.It was late,so I didn't push it.Just put my other 16t on there, with the 43 Driven. No vibes at 4000,5000,and on up anywhere. It feels like a new bike. With the stock setup, even with the PC and flies out,in first it would "bog" slightly for a second if I punched it at closed throttle. She takes right off now-though I haven't tried to gas it at all yet.But the power is definitely immediate. She's shifting quite a bit different as well-I don't understand that, but it's way smoother than it was.Hope you're doin okay there.Able to get out and ride.Rain again all day yesterday-hopefully it's gonna be a good day today.Too bad they didn't ship em from the factory like this!!!Ride safe bro-take care!!!BTW-what's your speedohealer set at(I've got the V4-set at 14.9).

V4 For 16F/43R = -15.2 I do believe this is the number you are looking for. Always check with GPS for fine tunning.

The Zephyr sprocket fits the zx14 like a glove.

I have it on my bike and I know/stay in touch with other
zx14 owners that run it with zero issues.

It's in the 530 pitch and its exactly like the stock 17T
in a 16T version.

I had some worries about the oem 16T sprocket
when I firts ran the bike through the gears up on the
stands... then realized that even with 17T the chain was
bouncing and jumping and sounding funny with the rear tire up
in the air. The chain will also need to wrap tighter around the
smaller sprocket and that could seem off at first.

The 16T oem front is an awesome mod IMHO.

I'm running 16/42 on my busa which is equal to 16/43 on the 14. Now my busa runs like it should have They gear these big bores way to tall from the factory

Ya-had a 16/43 on there-for a few days anyway. It was okay-but I think I actually got a better response from my 16/42-So............It's back to that again-and yeah, she runs sweet.I think that 16t Zephyr sprocket with the rubber dampers on there does cut the vibe issue.Ran er all through the gears today-no vibes in any range.I just didn't like the idea of being in 6th at 70 mph.

Hey Mass, I was wondering about this. I have installed the 16F/43R on a friends zx-14. When I went to lube his chain the jumping was very alarming. I was all over the bike looking for the reason but all checked out to be OK. May be his chain? My 17F/45R is smooth as silk No jumping of any kind. I was planning to take a second look he gets a few more miles on the new gears. But if this is normal I won't bother? Whatcha think ?

mine does that if it has too much slack in the chain. i try to keep it around a inch and a half as much as possible.

i took the sprocket cover off the bike today and had my wife hold the front and rear brakes while i took a cheater pipe and a 27mm socket wrench to loosen the nut, and it was a no go. my brother's reassured me that his impact gun will do the trick though.

i was reading the service manual on this and it says to put motor oil on the threads of the nut when you replace it. any of you do this? i think that's the first time i've heard that one. i thought it would spin right off, but if it stays, it would probably help on the next sprocket change.

The 16T will have the chain clattering and jumping a bit more at first.
None of it will be present even during the very first ride after the install
with the proper chain adjustment and the wheel not dangling in the air.
The bike felt as smooth as before and it was actually convinient to cruise
in 5th and 6th gear at low speed and keep the Brock's pipe a little quieter for once.
The bike WILL NOT develop any vibration or noises of any kind with the rubber padding.

My old zx10 had the chain jumping really bad when the rear was up in the air
even with the stock gearing. My gf's R1 seems to do the same thing up on the stand.

Heads up everyone attempting to remove the nut on the sprocket:
It WILL NOT come out without a serious fight or a really powerfull impact driver!
It takes some serious strenght to defeat a nut torqued that much by hand.

And the needed socket is 27mm- Autozone has the DEEP socket in that size with 1/2 drive for around $10,
and it's the exact tool needed, a regular 27mm will not have the reach if I remember correctly.

The manual calls for applying non-seizing agent on the sprocket shaft upon install,
you can skip it, but you're risking to have to apply insane torque to get that nut loose again.
I simply forgot... well f*ck me if I need to go back to the 17T... eh!

Replace and bend the washer!!!! Again: replace and bend the big washer.

The 16/42 gearing with the 190/55 rear is essentially equivalent to just -1T in the front
and is great for the zx14 IMHO. The 43 and 44 is a bit too much when you want to push the bike
a bit harder or enjoy hitting twisties... it's just a tank slapper waiting to happen upon exiting
a corner and getting on the throttle a bit early. My front seems to be extremly lift happy with
the feather light BST front wheel. Actually the BSTs will make you shy away from the 16/43 and
attempt to make it work with 16/41 or 42. It honestly feels like the bike puts down another 25 rwhp...
or maybe I'm getting soft... LOL.

Long story short:
TRY the 16T front- YOU WILL LOVE IT!
