Fuel pump on early 14
10/04/16 8:17 PM

Guys, I put my 06 zx14 in to the shop to get some work done, while it was there they are fitting a muzzy 4:1 system for me along with PCV and qs. I asked the guys to do a baseline dyno run before they changed anything and it showed a problem that never appeared on the road. Resting fuel pressure is fine but as soon as they load it up the fuel pressure falls and the bike leans off, pressure keeps falling and getting leaner until they back off. So they auspected a fuel pump, they fitted a new one and retested it but the same problem is still evident. They were explaining that there is a mesh screen built into the pump housing (output side of the pump), its not servicable and they have seen a few bikes in which these block up. So the only options are a used fuel pump assembly (which may have similar age issues) or a brand new one (au $600 and 2 weeks+ to order from Japan). Has any of you guys seen a similar issue to this? I read that the 08 pump assembly had an improved fuel pressure regulator, is this correct? Will it fit my early bike? I also read that the same part is used from 06 to 11 but I found a new 09 model pump assembly on ebay usa and the seller reckons it wont fit... what do you guys reckon is I should do? Is there anything else that can cause this symptom? I read something about low stator output causing a symptom like this but the stator has been replaced.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

have heard of fuel pump filters plugging up and I believe there was a way to change it though it required the use of a filter for a diffrent bike than the 14. Sorry I can't elaborate but if you search this forum you may find the threads. People changed filters because they noticed problems with the bike during normal operation.

So they suspected a fuel pump, they fitted a new one and retested it but the same problem is still evident.

A new used one I presume?

I have an o6 and put a 10 pump in tank, they look a little different but bolt up just fine. Try to find a low milage pump and you will be good to go. Got one off of ebay for $40.00. Hope you score.

Hey rook, no it was a brand new aftermarket pump fitted into the old housing (which has the suspected blocked filter inside).

Ah...I see. Sorry I don't know more about this. Romans does and there was a thread going about 4-5 months ago. A fella from Norway figured it out....or maybe that was BigRed1's thread.

OZ you need to go to U.S.A. listing they say they will ship to N.S.W. There are several on there right now. Check into it you can save bunches of money. Let me know if I can help. Newer pump assembly doesn't have sump on bottom. I'm pretty sure 08 to 12 are the same. 06&07 have sump. Don't be jerking around with shop to do this work, you can do it yourself. I did it and never worked on a 14 before, plus I'm 70 years old. Have 06 with 700 miles on it, found in shed in March when it only had 7 miles on it. Tank and pump were a big ball of tar. Sat in shed for 10 years. Good luck. Was in your neck of the woods back in 1970, Sydney for I&I or R&R what ever you want to call it.

That was one. This was the other.

There's a couple more links in one of my posts that might give more threads. I know I saw a pick of the filter that was not sipposed to replaceable but somone used a filter for another bike.

As years go by, this is one problem with the 14 that is not common but it keeps coming up in threads.
