Loose Body Hardware
04/18/09 3:02 PM

Dude, I am very anal about maintanence, cleaning, inspecting before rides, and having tire pressure perfect before each time I ride the bike..... So with being anal comes tightening bolt on the fairing as the dealer and many people on here have said there has been issues with them workin themselves out.... (which I do b4 everyride!!!!) Well I lost one of those fuckers today, I am so pissed off !!!!! The ride was good tho!!!

I lost two in the first 1000 miles. I ordered a few from the dealer so I have a stock pile of them. Kawi dropped the ball on torque specs here

Two of us bought zx-14s at the same time and both bikes in the first month were missing the lower faring bolts. I now have locktite blue on all lower fairing bolts. No problems to report.

The lowers come loose. Especially those that screw into brackets on exhaust. They cost about $3/piece from stealer. I plan to blue locktight all of the lowers. I have no problems with fasteners that screw into rubber wellnuts. I just have those barely snug and they hold fine. I wouldn't use locktight on the wellnut fasteners or the wellnut might spin with the screw when you turn it. Could make removing it a nightmare.

I find the weakest loctite works best, the one for 1/4" or less fasteners. It's not as strong to spin the nuts, but just strong enough to do the job...just a dot of it on the threads works like a charm for me and I ride through ny city and I would always have my fairings loosen up cause the roads suck here.

Yeah i found within the first 600k on mine i lost 2 bolts as well, wasn't impressed (dealers charged ~$9.00 for the 2 bolts and washers)

I'd be hesitant about using lock tight... if thoes wellnuts ever started to spin your in for a long night of cursing to try and get that bolt off

I lost the rear bottom bolt on the lower cowling (at the exhaust) as well, at around 800 miles. I have to admit, I'm not going to go around the bike with 3 different T-handles and check every one of them before each ride, but I do eyeball them.

If the wellnuts on the lower cowling spin, hope its not the center one, because you can reach the front and rear and could get a small set of pliers on them.

I use blue 242 locktite on non-wellnut cowling bolts, nothing on wellnut bolts, never had one come lose on me either.

I forget what the bolt cost, but the black washer must have been made out of titanium for what it cost.
