Oil Use
08/29/10 10:51 AM

Okay all...my baby's got 39,000 miles.I noticed at least a month ago when I had Royal Purple in there, she seemed to use some oil.Not smoking, just dropping.I've no oil leaks.I changed out to 10/40(always 10/40)Motul double ester syn.300V.I never had any oil loss issues until a couple of months ago. It's always been Kawachem 10/40 syn.I ran about oh,say two weeks without checking the level. The other day I checked it....it didn't even appear in the sight glass at the vertical.Anyone having this kind of oil situation? No oil lamp lighting. She took about a half quart, maybe a bit more.I've used Gumout injector cleaner maybe three times in the 3 years I've owned her(twice this last year).Could this cause a problem with the tolerances inside the engine?I've had er up several times to the top.But those times would be compared as minimal in the overall mileage and running speeds.

Can the oil just "go away" without any engine parts actually being bad?It seemed to me that prior to this starting, she never needed any oil between changes...you know,2500,3000 miles or so.

Thanks all...ride safe and have a blast with yer spaceships!

It could just be the oil, like I posted in another oil thread some oils (actually alot of oils) don't hold up well to high heat and evaporate. Try different oils, I've had the best results with mobil1 and rotella when it comes to consumption. With those 2 oils I have never had to add oil in between changes. When I ran motul or royal purple I had to add about a 1/2 quart in between, didn't like that so don't use them. If an oil can't hold up to the heat it can't be protecting well.

Blue, I use FUCHS synthetic and never topped up between changes, which I do at 6000km. Always. Come to think of it, whatever the dealer used to put in my 06 model, I also never had to top up. Maybe it is the oil you are using. Heathun, I know that in SA one specific type of SHELL used to burn off in cars, and I think it was Rotella? Can't remember too well. Long ago!

Heathun, how many miles do you have on your bike now? Do you have a link to that Rotella stuff? I think I'll give that a try as I'm coming up on my 3k change.

I've got right at 30k on her now. I like the shell oil, the shell rotellaT triple protection is the one with JASO. It's not synthetic but I change my oil every 2500 to 3000 miles anyway, never have to add in between changes and the oil looks just as good coming out as going in. You can get it at walmart or any auto parts store. At walmart it's $11 a gallon and at auto parts stores it's around $15 a gallon.

Decisions decisions...what's a mother to do?I do like that red one that Bean's got.But I just can't.We're too attached now!I dropped er right after break-in.(imagine that).Basically did a complete rebuild on all the externals...minus brakes and frame and wheels.39,000 faithful miles now...never a peep of mechanical problems. Not one.I couldn't abandon her now.

I've used Castrol GTX 10/40 for break in, then Mobil 1 bike specific full syn 10/40 in all my bikes and they have never used any oil between changes....I also run extended oil changes, about 6000 miles.
