1/5 turn throttle
07/27/09 7:23 PM

Ok so about a week ago I picked up a 1/5 turn throttle insert for my bike. The way it works is that it increases the diameter of the throttle cam. Taking it from 92 degrees of twist to WOT down to 70. I've had it in for about a week now, riding back and forth to work and took the bike out for a 140 mile ride Sunday. Anyone interested in hearing about it

Well first I have to say that this was simple mod that yeild big gains in throttle responds. I had to modify my throttle cables to get enough slack to work with the insert. Not a big deal as long as you dont cut or nick the cable. The first time I took the bike out, the difference was immediate. The bike seemed to just want to jump from under you when you snapped the throttle, I think my ears got wet from the big grin on my face. Anyone else interest in hearing about it.

I guess you two found something else to do after Taebo.

I think the stock range of motion on the throttle is fine but it does seem like you really have to TRY to get WOT. I think that's great for new riders. Opening to WOT usually leaves me with my fingers on the grip for a split second until I can get my palm to sneak back up on there.

Are you two done yet?

Yeah the insert defiantly makes it a lot easier to go WOT (I'm still not sure if that's a good thing or not). During my day to day riding it's a lot of fun. Wheelies on the the 14 were easy before, but now it just scary how easily the front takes flight. I laid down my first dark blacky the other morning leaving out for work. I wasn't even trying too, I just gave it a little snap and it spun for abut 4 feet before I let off. The bike revs very quickly now and it requires a well trained hand to keep things smooth. That being said I rode down to N. Carolina Sunday to play around on some of the twisty back roads. Wow it's getting late, Taebo has wore me out. I'll tell you guys the rest tomorrow, if anyone is interested.

PS. this was a $25 mod.

Sounds like a cool mod but I was thinking about the jumpy throttle response a lot of us have complained about when getting back on the gas from closed throttle in a tight corner. I already have to feel for the tension in the cable and then go easy on. I think the main problem with jumpy throttle is the fact that most of us have a tiny bit of throttle play no matter how perfectly we adjust the cables. You mentioned that you had to modify your throttle cables. Are you able to achieve 0 throttle play now?

you always should have some slack in your throttle

This mod was originally made for the zx10r, which has two points of adjustment on the cables. The 14 only has one point on each cable. With all the adjustment out of the cables they were still to tight. I cut the plastic locking nuts off the cables, trying to get more slack in the line. That didn't help at all, the adjustment screw was just bottoming out on the other half. I ended up having to dremel about 1/4" off the bottom of both screws, careful not to hit the cable inside. I now have full adjustment from too tight to too loose, not zero play but pretty close. I really should have taken some pics, I'll do that if I decide to take it out. I still haven't made up may mind yet. As you can image this is like taking the muzzle of the dog and telling it not to bite you.

So I took the bike down to NC Sunday. A lot of back road curvy stuff, running around mostly in 2nd gear up in the rpm's. Man that TI force race pipe sounded so good! It wasn't all smiles though, my throttle inputs were all off. It just wasn't smooth for the most part, either too much or not enough. Getting on the gas mid corner was a test and feel type of thing. I kept looking for that sweet spot to just roll it on but when it came on it was on big time. I spent more time worrying about my right wrist then I did enjoying the ride. Well almost, lifting the front tire out of the corners and jumping hard on the brakes before the next one was kinda fun. But in the back of my head I'm thinking this dog is just waiting to bite. After the ride Sunday I was thinking about taking it out, but I rode it to work today and that type of responds is a lot a fun around town. So I think I'm going to leave it in for another week and see how I adapt to it.

its a rifleman quick turn throttle. you can get then from the classifieds on zx-10r.net . I got one in mine. and it is not for everyone. if you like twisties then its probably not for you. If you are a strait line guy you will probably love it. install isn't very hard at all. and shame on you for keeping it a secret and not telling your friends on here where you got it.

Interesting mod. I'm glad to know about it for possible future use but I don't think it would match my current habits.

I totally agree with you zxtwitch, I can't suggest this mod for someone who is really into the twisty stuff. This mod is a lot of fun to run around town with but that may be it. Yes this is riflemans throttle insert from over on the zx10r board. Maybe with a little more practice I will develop the throttle control skills need to attack the back roads with this mod. With that in mind I will give it one more week, if it doesn't work I'm going to pull it out and sell it to one of you guys.

its nice cause it a cheap mod. they make a professional system from schnitz which is alot more. and its is easily reversible which is nice. I take mine out if I know I am gonna be hitting the twistys in a few day. but I usually just leave it in. it is very fun around town. but yes if you install it expect the front to be in the air much more often till you get the swing of it.

I'm starting to like mine more and more, but this is around town. I'm going riding Sunday so I'll see then if I have improved with the right wrist. This thing is a blast around town.

I would like to see a write up with some pics. I like the linear power the bike already has but the throttle is choppy at times. If this is a mod that can be reversed even better. But to have to dremel near the throttle cables turns me off if that is what has to be done to get it to fit.

My only complaint with the stock throttle is I feel like I need to grap a second handful to go WOT. May not be a bad thing though as I do mostly twisties now and smoothness is everything. Hellfire dumped his 14 at low speed a few years back when he took all the slack out of his throttle. It tried to wheelie out from under him when he hit a speed bump.
This mod is prolly not for everyone.

I agree with you Kruz, this mod is not for everyone. I've got a little over two weeks of time on mine now and the smoothness has become better. I must admit, I'm really liking it. The bike pulls so hard now when getting on the gas and wheelies are directly tied to the right wrist. This is one of those good bang for your buck type mod.

Mile, This will make it, 'super choppy.' You thought responsive was at hand. You better hold on because things happen even faster.

I'd hate to have someone come along and twist that thing. Imagine you tap that on the throttle sync and out the case or through the head that is some whip it up.

I'd be on it like stink of fly, but not with a cable mod. It has to be factory fit or fuKit.

I have never remapped any bike until recently when I installed the PC loaded with map from Fuel Moto USA on the 14. On/off throttle is a lot smoother. There might be a gentle surge but nothing like the jump of the stock map. No more apprehensive search for the tautness in the cable. I'm thrilled with the smoothness of the bottom end power delivery. It finally feels like the flies really were pulled. With the stock map, I wasn't quite sure that I pulled the right ones.
