Diesel, kero, gas, oil, are like detergents or cleaning agents in some way. Sure, choose any of those to cut the tacky spray off links, grease, old gear oil, etc. It's who grows/eats/cracks the orings? If I lined up 3 shots of the first 3 cleaners, dropped an oring in each glass, pulled them out in a few days, compared who grew? I'd then eliminate that detergent for cleaning purposes.

Hubanese to English Translation:
Any solvent would technically work, the concern is damage to the o-ring. If you take a cup full of diesel another of kerosene and a third full of gasoline and let an o-ring sit in the cup for a few days you can tell which solvent will be absorbed the most and would thus be the worst solvent for cleaning.
On a side note, check any camping supply store, I bought a huge jug of kerosene from Canadian Tire for only a few dollars as they sell it as "camp stove fuel".

The one I bought was around the same price but literally 10-20 times bigger but you get the idea.

That's all over this forum in several threads. Some still trust WD-40 but not me. I heard the warnings and tried anyway then I saw the signs of warn Orings. WD doesn't do a better job than kerosene and it's not cheaper. A chain is a lot of work and expensive to replace so I don't risk it for the sweet smell of WD. I'd use it for things that have no rubber. It also might make a nice aftershave balm.

There are dedicated chain cleaning solvents out there, but I just use Liquid Wrench o-ring safe chain lube. Plenty of solvent to cut the old chain lube and crud off and lubes the chain at the same time. Then it's back to the BelRay Superclean every 3-500 miles when the rollers get shiny.
WD-40, kerosene, diesel fuel and other solvents MAY or may not be safe for the o-rings, but like any tool intended for something else, it's not as good as something that was intended for what you need.
30,000+ miles on the last chain, so I must be doing something right.

Hey snuffy, how the heck are you? Hope your back to 100% and ready to ride this summer. I'm thinking on putting a ride together in June, I think you city boys should head north again. Maybe Lake placid or over to Vermont.
