Exhaust Popping
04/20/09 11:48 AM

Hi All,

I did a quick search and was not very successful, so I figured I would just post the question.

I sent the following question to AreaP because I have AreaP pipes on my 14.....

Hello,

I purchased my current bike "used". The bike has approx. 2,700 miles on it. I was finally able to get it out on a ride (due to weather) and noticed popping (almost like a back fire) on decelleration. I doubt any other mods were done with the exception of your pipes. I am looking for a recommendation to correct this? I know I can add a power commander, but I have not had very good luck with them in the past. Will the popping hurt anything?

They responded with....

Hello,

There are many things that can cause this. The easiest place to start is by plugging the fresh air hose from the airbox to the rebreather valve. This may lessen it. A PC3 can help, but may not eliminate it completely. It is actually fairly common on most less restrictive exhaust systems for the ZX14. Most any of the ZX14 forums will have a pictorial and step by step for this modification.

Sincerely,

So.... Any ideas? I know popping (or backfires) are due to an air/fuel mixture issue. Even if I do attempt a PC3 (which like I said I have not had good luck with on previous bikes (2001 Blackbird & 2006 Hayabusa) which MAP would I use? Also....realistically, would plugging the fresh air hose do any good?

Plugging the air hose will definitely help with the popping on decel but may not eliminate it 100%. What year ZX-14 and are you flies in or flies out? If you have an '08 I would be tempted to plug the air hose and be done. If you have an '06/'07 with flies still in, pull em and add PCIII with a good map and a TRE006a from Ivan's Performance ($49 + shipping). You'll get a massive increase in low end to midrange kick and the TRE get's rid of all the popping and makes power delivery smoother.

^^^^ What he said^^^^

If you wanna try plugging the AIS, just stick a marble in this hose:

It's under the right side of the airbox. Pull it out, put a marble in it, then plug it back into the hole.
Helped but did not eliminate my decel pop. A TRE (actually a GIPro) stopped the pop.

This how I came to the forum world ...... Backfire at 3500rpm on decell. I took the advice the guys listed above. I have NO backfire now. From the TRE006A I also have no gear display The N light still works . The cost was well worth it to me, as I could not deal with the explosion out the back of my new pipes . If this is not a option, stick with the marble.

Kruz,

I have an '07. I believe everything is stock with the exception of the pipes.

With regards to Romans response... is it normal to lose the gear indicator when installing the TRE006A ? Also, would I be correct in assuming the TRE takes the place of the AIS thus not needing to plug it? Or am I missing something?

Ray, you do not have to plug the air injection line if you install the TRE006a. You will have to remove the flies though(subthrottles) to use the TRE but that's about a 1 hour job and will unleash the true low end potential of your 14 so you'll probably want to do it anyway. I think almost everyone on this forum that owns an '06/'07 has removed the flies. If you add a PCIII and a good map it gets even better!
Like dogo said, the marble is a quick fix but you will still have some residual popping, just much reduced. The TRE gets rid of all of it. Yes, you will lose your gear indicator( it will show "N' at all times) when you install the TRE but it's really a small price to pay. I don't have a gear indicator on any of my other bikes and the last thing I want to do on this bike is have my "head in the cockpit" when going fast. You'll soon forget you ever had it.

I don't find the need for the gear indicator, but you know how it is....if it is there, it should at least work properly. Just my opinion. You are right though, I would rather have the performance over the indicator.

If you want a GI, a GIPro w/ ATRE is another option:

After custom mapping, bike runs great. Still have some popping upon decel when cold or sitting in traffic. Once the extra fuel is burned, no more popping. Just the price you pay for great ride.

Hey Romans, I know you experimented with a lot of maps, which one did you finally settle in on for your 14? I got lucky on my first try and am hesitant to mess with it. My CBR is driving me nuts because of the roller coaster power curve, it is no where near as smooth in power delivery as my 14.
