Lost Key
12/11/17 1:19 PM

So after dropping my bike off to store it for the winter, my one and only key has gone missing. I tried calling local dealer, and cannot get any info for a key code, or anything helpful. I asked a local shop for ideas, and they basically had nothing to offer.
I am thinking to just buy a full set with two keys off ebay, and swap everything out. Fortunately, I did not lock the head when I put it away, so that shouldn't be too hard to get off. The seat and helmet latches I feel like I should just need to remove fairings to access hardware, and with some elbow grease, I am confident I can figure out how to get that open.

The gas cap is my only worry. I have never attempted to drill out a lock before, so this worries me to do. I know that I have to be careful not to drill too far or shavings will end up in the gas tank. I have watched a few youtube videos, and I can't really figure out where to drill on the head. Can anyone slap a picture or something from MS paint or something of a diagram of where I need to drill?

may not be as simple as just a nuts & bolts issue...
you also need to match the electronics... your key must connect to the ECU
back to your dealer, hopefully they have the hardware for magnetic key coding
otherwise your bike just won't start

Pretty sure you can remove the gas tank cap assembly by removing the ~6 hex-head screws before you drill anything.

And I thought the drill was to take your title/vin and proof of ownership to the stealership and they could order you a new key. I've read that several times on other forums, have not had to do it myself, but I do have my key code safely filed in the safe.

Remove the helmet lock. One screw. Extra weight. There is a cable helmet lock on Gen 1s if you really like leaving the lid on the bike...or get a Giza cover when they are on blem sale. You can put it on in one minute, is easy to carry, protects and conceals the bike and you can leave the helmet hidden sitting on the seat if you want. I just carry my lid with me. I do use the Giza cover every time I park outside for any length of time. It rolls up very small.

Pretty sure you can remove the gas tank cap assembly by removing the ~6 hex-head screws before you drill anything.

I would give it a try but I believe the cap will need to be opened before the whole assembly will come off. There is a tooth that hooks into the fuel tank and if it's not retracted by unlocking it, it will stay latched to the tank. It might come loose but IDT it will come off until you unlock it. Give it a try. 3 screws. I will update my gas cap tutorial ASAP. Don't drop the little rubber gasket on the overflow nozzle into the tank.

Seat lock could be set up to operate by hand but you'd need to take the side tail fairing off to get at the cables and you'd need to remove the seat to remove the tail fairing. I plan to just put screws through the seat into the seat lock mount when I cut my OEM seat foam down. More dead weight gone. When the seat has to come off, take out the screws. The busa seat is fastened by two screws and no problem there. Nova has his seat fastened by screws.

I'm sure there has to be some dealership somewhere who can get you a key that will work. Try the dealership the bike was purchased at. They often keep the key # on file.

I should have clarified, I have a gen 1. 2006, so I don't believe I need to have it encoded to the bike. The key was just a rubber grip and a cut blade.

I tried contacting the local dealer with my Vin, and he looked it up, but was not able to find a key code, so this added credence to my suspicion its just a basic old fashioned key.

I did search where I am storing the bike, it's my parents temperature controlled garage. I also checked the car they gave me a ride home in, and have torn apart every part of my house in search of the damn thing.

@cruderudy - thanks, but Rook is right. The cap housing bolts down, but the cap itself has two wedges that hold the cap down. Otherwise the whole point to a locking cap would be a waste. anyone with an allen set could open your tank.

Have you tried calling some of your local lock smiths? They would (well, should) be trained on how to deal with this, you would need to prove the bike is yours of course but that should be pretty easy to do.

My 06 came with a key #tag I think to be able to order replacement key if needed. I have once found a key in the washing machine filter not just in the barrel. Didn't find any of my missing socks though. Did you check the seat latch? I have pulled my seat and forgot to remove the key. Looked all over for it before I finally saw it. Being that the lock is up under the tail it is easy to miss it.
Good luck.

So after first dealer failed to be of any help, I called another one in the area, and they at least were willing to reach out to Kawasaki and see if something can be done that way. Hopefully they can.

Usually on the older bikes there is a key code stamped on the back of the locks. If you can get one of them off the bike, maybe the helmet lock, look for a 4 digit number. Maybe use a mirror to look under the ignition.

A good lock smith with the right tools can measure your tumbles and cut you a key or two, just call a good locksmith and pay em and be done. I know because I did it with my 07

.
I believe this only applies to 2012 and newer bikes.

.
I have a 2010 Zx14, lost my bike's tags key code and also my replacement key. So before losing my original key I ordered (2) blank keys from Ebay (Part number #27008-0030). Took it to a hardware store in my neighborhood, and had keys made for $2.00 dollars each. 2006-2011 don't use a key code.
