Carbon Fiber for Christmas
12/25/09 7:48 PM

My brother knew i was looking at getting carbon fiber for my bike and so he bought me carbon fiber lowers and heel guards off Ebay (made by Bestem) and as much as i wanted them to fit i could'nt make it work and it was far beyond holes not lining up and being able to make adjustments so he's going to get a refund for them. I just thought i would warn everybody.

That's a bummer. How do these companies that make things that don't fit survive? That's got to be about the easiest thing to test in the world. Either it fits or it doesn't. It doesn't seem like it should be that difficult for them to make a mold from the OEM body panels and cast parts in carbon fiber.

Bestem makes some of the nicest cf body work around. They are highly regarded on all zx14 forums I frequent.

I also have their heel guards and they are nicely crafted with excellent fit and finish.
You can see them on my bike in the Pictures section.

I have Bestem lowers, and will grant I had to use the dremel to open the wellnut holes a bit, and to make the two halves join properly at the speed rivet. But the quality and finish are great.

If you are going to get carbon fiber, EXPECT it not to fit perfectly. There will usually be some drilling, cutting, or grinding that has to be done.

I have the rest of my 08 in carbon fiber now, as well, all courtesy of MDI Carbonfiber (ebay store). All beautiful pieces, good finish, properly laid up. And a whole lot of drilling, cutting, grinding and test fitting it took to get it on.

Make sure you buy all the liners from Kawasaki that attach with self-adhesive. They keep the panels from flexing and make them stronger and less likely to crack or get heat-damaged.

Now I have to save up for Racer Railz cause I don't want to even think about what a tip over would do to it.

I have my entire bike in carbon fiber (just ordered the last few pieces). Everything took a little work to get to fit right, its just part of the deal. Bestem does have the best stuff, they just don't have much of it.

Privateer, don't worry about a tip over. I dropped mine on my trailer. It scratched the clear coat but that was it. Very pleased with the abuse the carbon fiber can handle.

PS i didn't install any of the liners, and have had no problems.
