New Helmet
09/28/15 8:47 AM

I was wearing a Bell Evo Modular helmet but Mav and several other people have suggested that is a bad idea especially if a high speed accident occurs. So this morning I bought a Arai Corsair-V Nicky Hayden GP Easy Rider. It is brand new with tags on it from Ebay from a top-rated plus seller for $599.99. I used their (Arai) sizing chart and I also found out that I've been wearing the wrong size helmet. You are supposed to measure your head just above your eyebrows with a cloth measuring tape and pull it snug and take the measurement. My head was 21 and 15/16 inches in circumference and according to the sizing chart, I would need a small size. I've been wearing either a medium or large.

I also watched a Youtube video with Jay Leno's motorcycle section of his garage and he had a rep from Arai featured and Jay Leno went down from an extra large size to a medium after the Arai rep measured Jay's head.

Long as it doesn't chafe your brow when on...it's fine...or should be.If it's just 'too snug'...get a next size up.Better that than finding out midride it's just TOO damn uncomfortable...great choice BTW...PICS!

Too small haha--yes that sucks for a couple years but once it wears in to the shape of your head, mighty secure feeling to me. My Zox helmet is like wearing my own head. Only had it in Small but I grabbed it for $16. Now fits perfect. I think the reason they were on closeout was because the face shield has a tendency to fly up when you turn your head at high speed. Other than that, looks cool and I guess they work fine -- Kruz crashed 3 times wearing a Zox and he still has all his marbles as far as I can tell.

Grn14, I just ordered it this morning so it will probably be about a week before it gets to me, but as soon as it does I'll post some pics.

I hope your Arai works well for you and that is a great price. I had always wanted to try an Arai and since I get cost+ pricing at Honda East and they had one my size I got it. I got a Signet-Q and I have a very hard time when in full tuck on a LSR run to see. I got a medium and am sure I should have gotten a small.

You basically want the helmet as snug on your head as possible. If you were a "high" small I could see maybe going medium. When you have an accident and the helmet is too large it's going to significally increase the risk of brain injury.

In an earlier post, I mentioned an Arai rep that was featured in Jay Leno's motorcycle section of his garage and in that video they showed a clip of a moto gp racer that went down at 192 mph wearing an Arai Corsair helmet and that was enough to convince me that I need arguably the best helmet that money can buy. Here is the clip:

My last 2 helmets have been Arais.

My buddy wears Shoei's and there a lot of things I like about them, but I just like how light and how they feel.

Hope you like it!

I just got an Arai Signet-Q, have not had a chance to test it at speed but the fit is very comfortable. I tried a Med and NFW I could get it on, the Large is the same size as my Shoei RF100 and its just overall more comfortable than the Shoei. No hot spots just comfortable all over.

Back in the 1980's I knew next to nothing about helmets... just knew that I needed one. I had a $60 Bell full-face helmet that was two sizes too big. Noisy and loose. I was going 60mph when a toyota turned right in front of me and I hit his front fender. I flew 108 feet from there to were I landed on the ground and tumbled. The tumble knocked my gloves, helmet, glasses, and boots off of me. I only broke my finger, but it really bothered me that the helmet came off.
When I went shopping for a new lid, I was lucky enough to meet a guy that knew a lot about helmets. I ended up with a correct fitting Shoei. Worlds better, secure fit, quieter. The cheapest I'll go now is HJC, but I prefer Shoei and Arai.

A lot of good helmets, but there is just something about an Arai, I have a Shoei and its great,
but just something different (in a good way) about Arai ....

Like aegisranger said, HJC is about as low as I will go .....

Watching that video really makes you think about what lid your going to wear.... Most of us will not be in a "closed course" if and when we need it, and hopefully not going down at 190mph....
Shoei GT Air for me, love the retractable sun shade. Have always used Shoei and never tried anything else. It appears from the little reading I have done that Arai, Shoei, Shubert are the "pinnacle" of quality. Before buying this time (I get new helmets to match bikes I have), I looked into lesser expensive helmets but just won't skimp on something that will possibly save my life or my wife's if we need it.... Hope none of us ever need it from a crash but what is your head worth?
Be safe!

My helmet came today and I love it. It feels very tight and secure--I'm not used to having to squint my eyes to put on a helmet, so I guess I've been wearing the wrong size after all. I love how secure it feels and I really like the way it looks. Here are some pics:

The shape of the helmet is as critical as the size. A Shoei XL fits my skull perfectly side-to-side, but ends up being loose front-to-back. A large Shoei is too tight at the temples. I recently bought an Arai Corsair V (large) and did some adjusting to the cheek pads and the shape fits me well. It's noisier than my Qwest, but a lot lighter. I had an Arai Corsair RX-7 (XL) that I crashed several years ago and I had to add an extra cap pad so it wouldn't slide down on my eyebrows.

One of the manufacturers (AGV, I think) has a custom 3-d mapping thing that sizes and pads a helmet perfectly to your head, but it's not cheap. The resulting lid is over $1000.

Thanks for all of the replies. One quick update: Even though this helmet is hard to get on and off--it is unbelievably comfortable--and for everyone who wears eye glasses this helmet has two little slots that seem like they were made for eye glasses to slip right on. In fact, this Arai Corsair V size small is easier for me to get my glasses on and off than my size large HJC helmet.

I took her out for a test ride and fully tucked I can see better than ever before. If you close all the vents, it is not nearly as loud as when you open all of them up, but still a little noisy.

In addition, this helmet did not have that toxic Chinese smell that everything seems to have now-a-days. The Japanese engineers have hit a home-run with this helmet.

Cheers,

Skewed

I had a bell revolver EVO modular helmet and sold it to get a track-approved icon airframe

both are nice helmets but since I no longer ride on the track ( had a very bad accident, air lifted to ER, and a hospital stay) I think I'm going back to the bell revolver modular

I love the look and the modular feature is very, very useful

I'll splurge and get a $2400 brocks exhaust but I'll just not pay $600 plus dollars for one helmet when a $250 helmet will give me just about equal protection and looks even better than the high dollar helmet.......in my personal opinion

No offense of course
