Race to the bottom?
08/11/14 7:38 PM

So after rereading some posts about miles on our bikes I started wondering if I'm the biggest slacker on the forum...

I've had my bike two years later this month and only have 4700 miles on it? I live in Ohio so the weather is not as nice as you Cali boys have, but it's not the Pacific Northwest.

I work entirely too much and have three little girls too small to ride just yet.

So in short, do I win the slacker award?

I wouldn't call you a slacker. Working and taking care of your kids...I would call you a responsible. Before you know it you will be racking in the miles.

I sold my bikes when my kids were little, no time to ride. Between that and the risks that go along with riding the way most of us do made me throw in the towel for a while. I used to go for a ride and feel guilty, having a conscience is a bitch lol. Anyway kids grow up and before you know it you'll have extra time on your hands and will enjoy riding more and more often. Sounds like your far from being a slacker.

I live in Indiana. My goal is ~1000 miles/mo. I got my bike June 14th, my goal is 2500-3000 this year. I've got 1730 on the clock right now. I hope to ride into late september maybe even october if it's nice enough.

Miles vary, what really needs looked at is time. I ride urban 50%, 40-50 miles in a couple hours of ride time. Out and about I get 70-100 miles in a couple hours. I rarely take trips (interstate), in fact never on this bike so far that would rack up 200-400 miles in one day.

2350 miles/season is no where near the least I've heard people ride. I know a person with only 11k on their 2003. I know another guy that only rides on Sundays, sometimes. I guess for him the conditions and timing have to be exactly perfect, and he refuses to ride on a 4 lane highway.

Lol. As long as you're out riding when you can that's all that matters!

I've got only two to three months out of the year I'm actually free enough to even think about riding. It snows from November till March then once the weather is nice I'm busy with farming then after that is all done it leaves me with July and August as the only two months I can ride, September-November I'm busy farming again. But when I can I ride the shit out of this bike! Owned it for almost a year and a half now and got over 17,000. Not bad for roughly 5 months of actual riding. Personal best was 3200 miles in 5 days last summer. If you don't count my trip to NY this summer I've only ridden 2500 miles this year cause like a lot of y'all I've just been to damn busy this year to enjoy the girl. Some things in life are much more important than getting out to ride.

Just ride when you can, sometimes I just take short trips to the long freeway ramps a do a couple
wheelies, and it gets me happy if I feeling down, like I tell everyone, it doesn't take long
to have fun on this bike !

The problem with So. CA. is its HOT most of the time, we didn't get a Winter OR a Spring this year,
and it's freaking dead Summer Now !!! 100 degrees all the time for the next couple months at least....

it hasn't been cool here for any real length of time for about a year and a half !

I bought a leather jacket and dainese leather pants in January, and I only got to use them once !

Oh and traffic SUCKS ! and POPO is EVERYWHERE NOW ! I'm not kidding ....

I thought I would stop riding when my baby girl was born, but didnt. I do feel guilty when I go ride though. I catch myself riding overly cautious most of the time. That's why the zx14r works for me at this point in my life, but this bike is begging to be flogged.

Thanks guy. I was close to the edge of selling. I still have my VTX, but its paid off and don't see me selling it for along time yet. But they both sit a lot.

I am looking forward to the day when my girls are old enough and want to ride with 'the ole man' to school or whatever.

I will keep clicking off the miles as fast as I can :) Thanks for the feed back. Nice to know its not just me and that most of us have gone through this part of life.

When I commute, it's 100 miles round trip. That's where I get a lot of my miles.
