Anyone have any recommendation for a replacement chain and sprocket kit. I like to go with OEM factory parts as far as possible but it comes out at over £350! Thinking maybe something like this.......DID Chain

EK ZZZ was the way to go some years back. That model was superceded i guess but given the reputation, I'd go with it. Almost never needs to be tightened unless you change sprockets. Mine's got about 36000 miles on it. Still looks new. Have not measured stretch yet but i only tightened a tiny bit about 3 times. Weighs a tiny bit less than OEM and much stronger.

Sprockets, you can go with any brand you want for aluminum. Use a steel front, it will wear out about the same time you need to replace the rear which is better than you replace the front and then you need to replace the rear 8000 miles later. Replace all at once, you only have break in wear once. Replace one part at a time you go through break in 3 times, wear on all the parts that should have worn in once. Vortex is the lightest rear I know of. Any steel front but i used supersprox and it has been good to me. Also used AFAM rear sprocket...wears about the same as Vortex alum or any other alum sprocket, I'm sure. If you can find an aluminum front sprocket, don't use that. It will wear out in no time.

Make sure you get all parts in the same pitch. I don't want to give out misinfo on this so I will not mention the pitch number but I will say, stick with stock pitch. You can go to a smaller pitch and save weight but most will tell you, that is not safe for a hyperbike even if liter bikes make the same hp, they don't have the tq.

I personally would go with steel sprockets front and back, they last forever and don't cost a whole lot. For the chain, go with the highest tensile strength you can find otherwise you'll be adjusting it often and replacing it sooner than necessary.

That ebay listing is a bit confusing, it lists a part number of "K24327-2" which isn't a part number I can find anywhere else and the listing states that the chain is a "Chain: 50VX GB x 118" which there is no 50VX DID chain, I can only assume they meant 530VX which is probably the minimum strength you could go with.

I replaced my stock chain/sprockets with something like 40-50k kms on them and went with the DID chain and steel front/back sprockets, I "had" to adjust them for the first time in 2 years by 1/4 of a turn of the adjusting bolt so its looking like this chain should last me a good long while.

According to the DID site http://www.didchain.com/streetChains.html you would want a "530ZVM-X" chain, it'll cost you more up front but should give you more use in the long run.

My current (OE) chain has almost 30K miles which includes a lot of very wet weather riding. It's certainly not worn out or giving any problems but is right on the stretch limit according to the specs in the FSM so I reckoned on just getting it changed ready for another new riding season.

Nightmare...You're absolutely correct in the DID chain spec recommended by them. The 530VX looks to be a 'standard duty' chain and the ZVM-X heavy duty and closer to or equal to OEM spec so that's the one I'll go for. I'll almost certainly use JT steel sprockets as I've used them before on dirt bikes and they last ages. Can't seem to find a chain & sprocket kit that offers this chain/sprocket combination so may have to source separately. If I can get another 30K out of the replacements I'll be well pleased!

Thanks for correction, GIXERCON. I edited that. Formerly the EK ZZZ x-ring, new and improved EK ZVX3 nx-ring. 530 is the pitch for a hyperbike.

Superprox rear sprockets last as long as regular all-steel sprockets, but with the aluminum center carrier, are much lighter. Supersprox offers complete kits with a great guarantee. Well worth the extra $. I have used Supersprox on two different hyperbikes, and the sprockets will easily outlast 2 premium chains with normal lubrication and maintenance. And before anyone gets excited, I realize it's conventional wisdom to replace sprockets when you replace the chain, but conventional sprockets are usually worn out by that time anyway. I've changed chains using the same sprockets with no ill effects on either bike.

It's a compromise between causing more break in wear on the chain and using the full life of the sprockets. The chain will stretch a little bit on sprockets wether they are old or brand new. The sprockets will wear on a chain wether it is old or brand new. The only time I find frequent chain tension adjustment is when chain or sprockets or both are new. I see no need to go through that more often by using half worn out parts with fresh ones. I just make a call on the life left in the parts and the price of the new ones. I won't be changing my EK chain when I change sprockets soon because the chain probably hasn't got much stretch. I will change both front and rear sprockets even though the rear looks like it has more life in it. When I put my new wheels on, I used a brand new rear sprocket and it did not make sense to change the front and the chain. It did cost me a bit of chain stretch I could have avoided if I were able to bolt the old rear sprocket to the CZ wheel but that was not possible. So it's a judgement call based on the circumstances.
