Bonding Metal to Plastic
09/16/12 6:53 PM

Whats Up Fellas? I am instaling a radar detector to my bike and I am using the metal bracket that comes with the detector and I wanna attach it to the plastic windcreen whats the best product to accomplish this? I was thinking two part epoxy but not sure if thats the strongest choice.
Thanks

3M makes an adhesive tape that is incredibly strong. It is basically a strip of clear adhesive gel. (not the normal foam center double sided tape). The nice thing about this product, unlike 2 part epoxy or glue, it will not damage or react with the surfaces it marries to, and there is no hardening or drying time.

Clean both surfaces and give a wipe with rubbing alcohol to ensure that the surfaces are clean and oil free. Allow surface to full dry (the alcohol helps) Cut the product to suit. Then peel off the red film layer from one side of the gel strip. Apply the product onto your bracket. Then peel off the red film layer from the other side and press the bracket against your windscreen. Make sure you are happy with placement because once the gel strip makes contact it is very difficult (almost impossible) to pull it off. You can buy it at Staples or most places that sell office supplies. It is not very expensive.

I wanted to say:

I do not often use tape adhesive...... but when I do...... I use Scotch mounting tape.....Stay sticky my friend, stay sticky"

Your gonna want a body panel adhesive
We used it at work on big truck repairs where
We bonded Fiberglass to metals but here's a link
http://www.tcpglobal.com/3m/duramixadhesive.aspx
Some of these are only for metal to metal
My best suggestion is find a local body shop
And go in and talk to one of the techs there
Don't go to the body shop supply place...they'll
Sell you whatever to make a sale. I'm a do paint and body
Work and there are so many products that require
Diffrent applications some require a top coat for UV
Protection otherwise the sun will break the adhesive
Down and it will fall off..
They also sell mounts that go on the center of
Your forks...I've seen em on bikes.
But do some research before you do anything ?
That's my best suggestion

If you mount on forks, the unit will turn with the forks. NOt a big deal for riding but can be an issue for turning sharp at low speed. Techmount has a variety of mount for steeering stem, fork, bar end. Good quality I own a steering stem mount.

If you mount on the inside of the windscreen, make sure the vibration is tolerable.

Thanks for the ideas guys!

I am toying with the idea of riviting the bracket to the screen....I would hate to loose a $400 detector on the road if my bonding agent failed.

Hey Rook I have the techmount for the steering stem and it worked great for my detector but I just added the ohlins damper to my bike and know that leaves me looking for a new spot for the detector.

I never heard of the fork mounts I will check it out.

Rook Your Eyes Never Look So Good!!!LOL

Thanks

I made a bracket for mine that goes over the gauge pod and bolts on directly in the center rear of the pod. The detector is attached to it with some 3M Duallock, a sort of velcro on steroids. I am also using the suction-cup bracket that came with the r.d. to keep is from bouncing around since the bracket is bolted on a pretty good distance from the detector.

Takes quite a bit of effort to get the unit loose and off. There might not be room to do it this way with a stock windscreen. I have a ZGST. A double bubble might work.

I can send you the cardboard pattern if you're interested. Might have to shape it differently for a different unit.

I used to mount my detector on the bracket that uses the gas tank bolts and I bought the hardwired-smart cord (when I had my 2006 zx14). Velcro-taped the smartcord to the top of the dash as a semi-permanent fixture and can tuck the detector away anywhere - they even make handlebar mounts (Techmount, among others). When the red and green lights on the smartcord flash you can easily view them as they are practically on your instrument gauge cluster. Going to set this up for my 14R here soon.

I had mine on a handlebar-clamp Techmount, but I was concerned with it being exposed to weather. I have ridden in the rain with it mounted where it is now, and the ZGST keeps it in the dry. They still work even when stashed in a tank bag, but probably not as well.

Thanks for the offer Danno but I have my welder from work making me a bracket that will combine the techmount to the damper bracket.
I will post a pic when its completed.

Very neat. Did he just make the clamp/adapter to bolt the Techmount onto the steering damper or the whole thing?

Hey Danno
He fabricated a small piece of aluminum and made it curve around the ohlins bracket to give me a flat surface that the tech mount could bolt on too, its simple and looks pretty good if I do say so myself.

Anytime you can make something that does double duty, it's cool.
