finally getting to work on the 14
10/13/15 11:11 AM

Picked up the 14 about a month ago and have not been able to
get to work on it. Been working on my track bike getting it
ready for the trackday season. First trackday of the season is
this Sunday. Whoot, Whoot....

Finally got going on the 14...

New set of plugs
Flushed brake and clutch fluid
New air filter
Oil and filter change
Removed Radiator pressure washed and
flushed coolant refilled with engine ICE
Replaced stock exhaust cans with a set of Two Bro's Carbon cans
and got the link pipes ceramic coated black

Looking forward to getting her on the road!

What was the idea behind pressure-washing the rad on a new bike? Many advise against it because you can fold the tiny fins over reducing cooling capacity.

Danno,

Have not had engaging conversions with you since you stopped posting on
the ZZR forum.

The bike is not new, but new to me. It's a 2012.

I thought the above before/after pics would show the difference.
The rad had quite a bit of bugs, road materials and road grime stuck in it.

Yes, you can pressure wash the radiator. There's actually a note in the service manual
on how to do it.

piken,
Good info. We get a lot of chip seal road maintenance around and as a consequence sticky tar deposits in the radiator and oil cooler fins on bikes. My ZX_11 oil cooler fins were almost blocked. Had to use aggressive solvents and steam pressure to clean.

I didn't think a pressure washer was the same thing as a steam gun.

After a week-long ride to 4 Corners on the ZZR 12, I made my last fuel stop about 100 miles from home. It was a hot, steamy day and I was sweating inside my gear. Suddenly, I noticed a putrid stench, the source of which seemed to be the bike. Peering up into the radiator, I discovered several huge, rotting New Mexico grasshoppers cooking on the fins. Stopped by the car wash and blasted them out of there before I parked the bike in my garage. Yuck!

alg8er,

I think they are pretty close to the same thing. A lot of the detail shops have them to clean engine compartments. Basically a pressure washer with a super heater on it. Not sure how hot the water actually gets but it sure helps soften up the sticky stuff.
