Coming to America
12/28/09 11:56 PM

Hi, all. My Buddy and I are thinking of coming to America in 2011 and doing route 66. Is it worth it? Should we rather go from LA to Miami? We will only have about 2 and a half weeks, and we do not want to rush the trip. Any advice will be much appreciated. If we do 66, we will have to rent......oh no!! Hardly Davisons! Mmmmm.

OK, thanks for that. Maybe some guys on this forum have done it? I have looked on the net, and it seems as if the roads are not in good condition and we would rather do something else in America. We do not do the normal touristy things as they are just a rip off. We are maybe also thinking of renting one of those monster campers and just driving from LA to Miami. Obviously we are still in the planning/thinking about it stages but we want to make it worthwile as the current exchange rate is about seven and a half of our Rand to one USD. That makes it a bit expensive for us, so we wanna do it as cost effective as possible and still have a great time. Our wives will be travelling with us, so we really need someone to tell us what to do. We do not want to travel for days and see nothing, as I believe you do in Texas? Sorry you guys from there! Any info would be appreciated.

This might be a reah, but some of your countrymen have come to the USA in the past and may be able to give you some advice based on what they have experienced. They are Rene & Delene Changuion and they are in CMA in South africa. Here is the International Website so you can contact Rene.

You might consider trying to route through Colorado. Incredible roads and mountains here! -bg

Hey, BG, I knew you were going to pop that one in!!!!! Surprised it took you so long! When do you have winter in Colorado? Is it very cold and snowy? We don't wanna spend days stuck in snow. Also, I do not like lots of humidity, so maybe you can suggest somewhere? We will be coming in end June/beginning July.

It is cold and snowy at the moment. Hi temps in the 20s and 30s; lows near zero sometimes. There has been snow on the ground for a few weeks now. Not much, though. It's more normal to have a little snow in the morning and have it gone by noon. Must be the global warming <grin>...

If you can find show in June/July here, it will be very unusual or at the very tops of high mountains, although we did run into a freak hailstorm in mid-August behind the Black Canyon one year. Typically in June/July, temps will be in the 80's and 90's. August is usually the hottest month.

There is rarely any significant humidity here to speak of.

As you get closer to your trip, let me know if you'll be coming through Colorado, and I'll tell you where the great roads are. -bg

What kind of riding do you do? LA to Miami will just be a lot of boring highway riding (which I really hate)
and Route 66 will just be about sight seeing.
For any knee-dragging I'd suggest you stick to CA or ride the Dragon here on the East coast.

I don't know how things are now, but there was a time that Angeles Crest was a hopping place to knee drag in Cali. It is just North of L.A. Of coarse, Hwy #1 along the coast up thru the Sequoias would be sweet also.

Warning: If you want to see babes on the beach, then California is not the place. Water temp is around 56 deg. Far. year round. South Florida down thru the Keys is sweet, but humid.

Man, we have any kind of riding you want. We are just limited by the speed limit............ sometimes....
