Revised Upper Fairing Stay Bolt
11/16/13 1:12 PM

Just thought I'd show you guys the revised upper fairing stay bolt and nut. I'm guessing they did this in response to the rattling out that had been occurring. It's not clear in the pic but the bolt is identical in physical dimensions and is coated with something that is blue. The acorn nut was replaced by a proper lock nut.

Yeah C I got it straight from the dealer. Make sure they order it because the old stock they have will probably be the same as what you have.

I just added a dab of locktite to mine...and tightened.Used the factory acorn nut...but it's good they addressed this.Glad ya got her sorted with that Mav.One of mine was a 1/4 turn 'not tight' at about 1K...when I first checked em.Other was fine.Still locktited both and re-tightened.At 9800 miles now...all's well.

I replaced mine with those from my local hardware store. 3.50 for bolts and lock nut and washer. 1.99 for a small tube of loctite. 10k miles and no problems loosening again

I also had these bolts come out.
I replaced with another acorn nut and lock tight, but I'll continue to keep an on those rasacals!

My front end was flapping over every bump, when I looked in there to discover that the bolts had worked themselves out.

Local stealership said it had been superseded. Also it was only $5 so I decided that it'd be just as easy to get them the perfect diameter and also investigate what Kaw had done in response to the problems they were having. I also had my right side fairings blow off at the track two weekends ago. It snapped off the leading edge of the large mid fairing that ties in under the headlight assembly (the one with the Ninja badge) , broke a lower connecting piece on the same fairing, and the trailing edge of the lower that is bolted on just behind the exhaust exit. I managed to Plastic Weld everything back together and used pieces of cut up credit cards as reinforcement material on the backside of the fairing. I have been to the track twice since and all is well. I just want to remind everyone to check all of your fairing bolts and push pins at least once a week. Here is the location of the bolt that rattled out and ultimately caused the failure and the chin push pin that had become weak and didn't hold well anymore. It seems that if your pulling your fairings off once a week or so like I do the push pins become weak and need replacement much sooner than usual. Stay sharp guys.

Ricky Gadsen had his blow off as well...same deal(?).There's a vid of it on youtube. The right side.Probably from the same issues you had....fairing removal(s) and push pin weakening. Thanks for the update on these I've had mine off several times...so far..the pins appear fine and the seams are snug.I've never had the belly bolts loosen up yet on any of my 14's.I have that black plastic washer in there...seems to make a difference?Sometimes we think we can leave a part out...or we miss one somehow...I've got those washers behind all my bolts...none have loosened up...yet.

As one of those months ago that was accused of being nuts I'm glad to see they fixed the issue.

Well, just to add to the contradictions and affirmations:

The upper fairing stay bolts on my bike have been "tight as a drum" since I took ownership. 15000 miles coming up soon and I have been checking them since the issue first came to light on this forum.

BUT, my lower fairing bolts (belly pan?) like the one you show there in the picture have loosened up more that once.
I gotta stop just snugging the damn things and locktite them next time.

The little bolts (screws) on the chain guard vibrated out as well and I replaced them and applied locktite.

The belly pan or lower fairing bots did the same disappearing act on the gen 1, (2007), as they tried to do recently on the R.

Cheers!

It's case closed affirmation since Kawi issued a lock nut to replace the factory acorn.
