Shock Bushing Replacement Tips/Help?
04/22/12 6:34 AM

Has anyone successfully replaced the rear shock bushing themselves? I had the shock rebuilt and have a new bushing ready to go in, but can't even get the old one out... It probably didn't need to be replaced, but figured since it was out and its only $20 for the part, why not. Now I've tried getting it out using a c-clamp and sockets, from what I've seen online, and worry that I've done enough damage to the bushing that it should be replaced regardless. Any insight or tips would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise, I may end up having to outsource this to the shop.

It's likely bonded to the rubber shock bushing which is also likely bonded to the shock eye. Industrial-strength adhesives can be very recalcitrant. Short of setting it up on a drill press and boring it out a little at a time, you'll probably screw up more than you fix trying to press it out.

The bushing is actually the complete assembly of a rubber section sandwiched between two metal sleeves. I dropped the shock off at the dealership today and they'll get it done for 15-30 min of labor. Talking to them, getting the old bushing out isn't too bad, but getting the new one in can be tricky - they have to heat the shock eye and freeze the bushing and drop it in straight, so they typically have two new bushings on hand in case the first doesn't go in right. Obviously, I'd recommend anyone else working on their shock stick to the stock bushing unless there is an obvious issue with it...
