zx14 display problem
05/29/14 1:26 PM

Hi guys, I searched online and couldn't find any information. My 2010 zx14 was taken to a shop to have the coolant changed, plugs, and throttle bodies bored. When I got it back, I noticed the bike struggled a bit more to start. I rode to work, when I was done turned the key and the display went on, then I lost all power to the bike. Turned out the screw on the positive battery terminal came loose, I tightened it and all is good but the display - the indicator always reads "N", there's a part of the kawasaki logo not filled in, and the fuel gauge is overlapping. Any ideas?

WTF? When you said the gear indicator was stuck in N, I thought it sounded like a TRE was installed. That would be normal because the reason to use a TRE is to lock the bike in the N fuel map. ...but the rest of it is totally weird.

Sounds like they had a busy day at the shop. I'd ask them what connectors they unhooked and check those myself but I wouldn't be real keen on sending the bike back to them before I checked the easy stuff myself.

There is a connector (4 in all) to each injector on the T body assy. Also a connector that goes to the 4 stick coils. The main wiring harness would have also been disconnected to take out the T-bodies and that is one one of the biggest bitches to do when you work on this bike. There could have easily been a wire damaged on that. It's easy to check that it is connected though. Press the connectors together firmly and it will click if it was not fully connected. Check the crankshaft sensor connector too. Just check everything you can without having to remove the Tbody assy (hopefully). You might find this useful.

I'd also check the coolant drainplug too and the clamp screws on the top and bottom of the T-body bores.

So I decided to do a 2000km trip up north. About 500 km in I stopped for a beer, came out and the screen is back to normal and the gear indicator too. Wtf?

did you wash the bike just before the problem started? I had my speedo and engine go haywire once after a bath and it was fine a few hours later. I don't spray it with water anymore. I'm sure it is the speedo healer that connects inline with the speed sensor.

...or, you have a loose connection or some other kind of short that has rattled back into good contact. You might consider just letting it go since the bike seems to have operated normally when the display was messed up. Maybe it will never come back.

a cold one would sure go down good today.
