Scott Oiler or not?
07/18/14 6:51 AM

Hi all

What are your thoughts on having a Scott Oiler installed on the 14r?

Or any other type of automatic chain oiler for that matter.

There is 2 models of the Scott available. a B or manual type and an E or electric type. $200 compared to $400. plus install.

all thoughts greatly appreciated

Nigel

1. @ $400: that's not even close to the grease cartridges I go thru every 300 miles and say we add up the 14's vs. cartridge.
2. I like controlling the oil fling that hits my tire.
3. Part of the sport is maintenance. That A-B trip mode has me @ every 300 miles is one mode and the other for trips.
4. The maintenance part also makes me inspect more back there, not thousands of miles later with a tire change.
5. I'd try it IF... That unit can prove it outlasts a hand apply, creates no high spots to the chain length, etc.
6. Because, I squeeze every link and roller so that it is forced into the chain on both sides. With a one nozzle drop onto a chain, there is that centrifugal force of one way only, correct?
7. My thoughts are, no.

I have heard only good comments about the Scott oiler from 14 owners but that was quite a few years ago. It's not a real popular mod. I hear a lot of people report their chain and sprockets last a very long time doing minimal or no maintenance at all so a special unit to lube the chain is probably not of great value.

The chain should be well lubed at all times and it shouldn't cause a flinging problem, form what I remember. However, it's extra weight and money that could go on a lot more useful stuff. I guess it might be a good add-on if you do a lot of touring with hundreds of miles/day on the bike but for everyday use and sport riding, I'd just do the normal clean and wax every 300-500 miles.

Even if you have an oiler, you'll still want to do regular cleaning if you are doing proper chain maintenance and the cleaning is more work than lubing.

Maybe they will make a Scott Cleaner.
