Slip-Ons, to high heat seal or not?
04/26/13 9:32 PM

That is the question.

Taking advantage of the weather this weekend to swap my slip-ons. Always put them on and tightened them down and never had any leaks but have been reading that a small bead of high temp sealant should be used regardless.

What say all of you? Should I just put them on without and see if a leak is present or put some on regardless.

If so, which sealer to use?

Thanks!

Id put some on....might as well. I used this stuff on both of my Tsukigi exhausts. I'm sure it must dry up more or less go away at some point but I have no leaks. I use on all joints and crush gaskets.

Do a couple of coats. It's a little sticky to work with after it dries thoroughly so give it a douse of spray just before fitting the parts together. I'd tape off where you want the seal to end. No mess that way but I think this stuff cleans off with mineral spirits.

Thanks rook!

I'm pretty sure I have a tube of that somewhere in the garage. I'll put some on.

Cheers!

Out of curiosity, how would you know that you had a leak? (noise, smell, steam on an early morning?)

^^^Orange RTV was recommended to me but my Auto supply didn't have any.

Noise. The headers hiss on a full system(or so I was told) if they leak.

You're supposed to be able to spray soapy water on the pipes to check for leaks but you know how much time you have to do that before it turns to steam on contact.

I was going to switch them over on the weekend but never got around to it. Family kept me busy for the most part. Going to have to settle for the Two Brother's for a little while longer.

What are you adding to yours?

Put the Scorpions on with no sealer. Directions that came with them didn't call for any. No leaks, but I guess it couldn't hurt to use some Copper Coat.
