Laid her down, guys :/
11/08/12 4:52 AM

Hey everyone, Phatkaw here,

I just want to check in with everyone, and show I'm still here. I really like this forum. It's tightknit.
Sooo, I got my 14R on Sept 8th. Put about 175 miles on it, let's forward to Oct 13th:

It was pretty warm, I'd say 74 degrees outside. I'm on some country roads(twisty and straight) that I hadn't been on before. I was keeping it pretty cool, under 110 the whole time, just a few powerup's, w/e. Then I come around a turn at what I thought was a good enough lean / speed, but it was decreasing radius, and I just wasn't paying attention. I'm not a shitty rider, which makes it shittier. Slid off the side of the road, into the (grass) ditch. All I remember is face touching grass, sky, face on grass again. I hopped right to my feet, and was like, "Gosh darn golly, I scratched my motherfucking plastics!" As I'm putting my shoes back on (That's right, it knocked my socks off.) I was like, "Woah jimmy, better touch yourself and see if your ok." Legs, fine, neck fine, right shoulder fine, left shoulder...bone sticking out like a damn arrow head. Then my vision goes realllly hazy, and I feel the pain. I'm walking along the road, looking like a wicked zombie. Some dudes stopped and pleaded with me to call 911, I let them after a few minutes.

Me: Broken Clavicle in the midshaft, Broken Clavicle at the base, left side road rash, sprained neck, 3 broken ribs, bruised lung, bruised heart, altered ego (lol)

Bike: Broken left side mirror, broke back plastic that the seat sits on at the mounts, like where the ZX14R emblem is, totally supergluable, Dented right exhaust AFTER the the Midpipe (thank god), and some light scratches on the left side. All in all, not really bad, I will post pics tomorrow.

Law: Got ticket, went to court, fine "suspended"

I didn't post before because I was very angry and embarrased, but I'm feeling better now. The road rash is completely gone, and so is the heart and lung bruising. The bones have almost completely fused back together, and this is week four. I'm a bodybuilder, so this is pretty big deal to not be able to lift, but my doc just said it was ok to now, thank god. I drink a gallon of milk a day, and take a lot of steroids, so I think that's what healed me up so fast. I just thought I would share.

TL;DR / CLIFFS
*Crashed bike
*Got hurt
*Ok now

Anyways, I want to hear about your "first time"! Let's get some stories going guys!

Also, if anyone has a right mirror, or right exhaust can, I would be very interested for a reasonable price (College student here lol) When I say right side, I mean sitting on the bike, your right side.

Wow! Sorry to hear that you went down. Glad to hear that you are recovering pretty well. Sounds like you got hurt worse than the bike. Most times, the rider fairs better than the bike. Sort of funny to hear you say that your shoes got knocked off. I had an accident this past Sept., and one of my shoes was knocked off as well. I still don't know how it happened, but that seems to be the going thing at most motorcycle accidents. Continue to get better and just remember that bikes can be replaced, but individuals cannot.
On a side note, I am glad I didn't have a bike like your at your age. If I did, I wouldn't have made it to be a grandad, or possibly not even a dad. Be safe.

Glad that you are healing, it could have been a lot worse, I went through most of what you are going through earlier in the year, They gave you a ticket ? really ? thats BS I remeber telling the cop while I was sitting on the ground after the accident that I was going the speed limit, when the lady at the STOP sign suddenly pulled out in front of me, wish you the best of everything while you are healing, take care

Curious since you crashed approximately a month after you bought the bike, what you were riding prior to the ZX14?
Glad you're still around BTW.

" that I hadn't been on before. I was keeping it pretty cool, under 110 the whole time, just a few powerup's, w/e. Then I come around a turn at what I thought was a good enough lean / but it was decreasing radius, and I just wasn't paying attention. I'm not a shitty rider, which makes it shittier".....I know the feeling...very well.

110 on an unknown road though....yer very lucky...glad you're still here...and I mean that.I've always said....acelleration is one thing...seems so EASY....but stopping....now THAT's quite different.Even slowing for an 'overcooked' corner...very risky on a bike of this power and size.I always try to go in 'slow'(not actually 'slow slow'...but near the speed limit anyway)....unless I can see all the way through and out.And power up 'gently' to the exit. With one exception...ANY road that has a curve marked "15mph"......you best be doin 15 mph.....at least around here;)

Heal up quick and get back out there....if ya dare!;)

I told Kruz a while back...I HATE running those farm to market roads at anything BUT the speed limit.I know a guy who rides em like he's nutso.....not me.....just too much can happen with the smallish hills and obscured visibility. Then ya have the driveways to consider....sometimes,just after a curve,or just past a rise in the road.VERY dangerous actually.

My recent 'off' was virtually identical to what you did...so don't feel too badly...it happens....had 10K on my new 14R...then....boom....exactly what you did.On a road I've ridden on several times...including 'getting faster' on that last decreasing radius curve. Not this time....blew it totally. My vid....youtube...."14icbm"...it's there...in all it's ugly glory.Thank God I wasn't doing but only a little over the limit of 45 through there(I think about 60-65)Course,at that speed, real estate can run out REAL QUICK if ya do the wrong thing. It was fast enough though to screw shit up totally!.Take care now.

Hospital bill?.....94,000+ dollars for that one...plus the OTHER hospital they had to take me to before I lifeflighted out of that one....27,000+Expensive few minutes of 'carvin that corner' I'll say.Insurance is getting me a new bike though....so that's SOMETHING anyway:)

A gallon of milk a day and steroids? Don't worry about your clavicle, mine healed up in 5 weeks and I'm 61. Be more concerned about what you're doing to your long-term vascular health. I know a woman who went to grade school with Arnold Schwartzenegger in Austria and she says he has to do kidney dialysis because his are wrecked from steroid use.

Phatkaw: Dude, first off, stop the gallon of milk and steroid thing! Bodybuilding is like the Olympics unless you're among the 1% of the population who have freak genetics it's not worth it! From your picture and diet, I can tell you're not one of them. Sorry. That being said with hard work and a healthy diet you could be successful as an amateur. I don't mean to sound condescending but the diet I had to follow to play sports in college: high proteins and carbs intake sent my cholesterol number through the roof! Arnold, Stallone and the like can afford to "cheat" because they have money for the best doctors and even then they don't age well.

Now back to the topic. I'm curious too. You said you are a good rider. How many years and what kinda bike. Also could you describe the accident in details? 99% of the mc accidents I have seen or heard about on windy road took place because the rider didn't feel comfortable leaning the bike further. Also, what traction mode do you usually ride in etc?
Speaking of which, my opinion is that TC should be used only for rainy/wet/track condition. It can give you both, a false sense of security and an overestimation your skill level.

Hope you heal fast and get your bike back on the road.
P.S. a ticket when you're the only one involved in the accident!? I wouldn't pay that! Take them to court

Wrong, Cooter we can tell him. Matter of fact we just did (1st amendment of the US of A). What we can't do is: force him to do it. Those are just advice. He still has to make a choice. It's a free country after all. If you can tell a dead guy he shouldn't be riding in the triple digit in a busy street why can't we tell phatkaw he shouldn't use roid? Just saying!

ZX14MAN64: I'm becoming more greatful as the days pass. This is true.

blacklightning: I will remember that. and it does make you think of the forces involved to take shoes off of feet. I mean, shoes are essentially attached to your feet lol

carabuser: That's exactly what happened to my grandfather. He says it not our fault most of the time...When the cop gave me mine, I was like, in a hospital bed, with IV's and shit in me. It was retarded.

Jagman: This was my first streetbike. I had been riding dirt for, oh, 11 years? I will swear up and down it wasn't my skill level, I'm always trying to be better at riding. I just need to not let my guard down. That was my error, not my experience, IMHO.

GRN14: Goddamn! That sucks dude. I will watch your video for sure when I get a chance. And yes, I really need to just NOT speed on back roads. I couldn't have been going over 55 on a 45 turn. There's no way! Def something I will consider.

Romans: That sucks dude, I wish your bro well! It will be fine, I will post pics of damage, tear down, and rebuild. I bet it won't cost over 200 to fix completely, honestly.

Danno: My family has 0 history of genetic predisposition to any diseases. And Ah-nuld (Arnold) had a genetic heart valve condition that coupled with the wrong types of steroids to cause him serious damage. I appreciate the concern, but this is something that I love, and something that helped me overcome more serious drug addictions. I honestly don't think it's that bad for you, used reasonably.

Dragking: With no understanding of my background, I could completely agree with your assesment. However, I lifted natrually for two years, and on drugs for one year. I went from 106 lbs, to 191 lbs, reletively lean. I know my gentetics are shit, that doesn't stop me from acheiving my dreams. You can't even see my physique in this picture. Having said that, I know my genetics would never put me on a pro stage. I would never want to be on a pro stage, as most people don't understand the hardships those guys go through for that. My diet is fine for what I'm doing, I put alot of work into it. I could literally get an 8 pack in a few months if I wanted one. I don't. I'm a powerlifter / bodybuilder, and I feel that I'm on the right track. Look up 'Jay Cutler mr. oylimpia' That dude was super skinny as a teen, but it doesn't matter because drugs circumvent your genetics, that's why people take them. Why would It be fair for me to get less result out of the same amount of work as another?

I work very, very hard at diet, and training. Steroids aren't magic, they're tools of trade.

As far as TC, I think it was in 1. I usually ride in 1. 11 years of riding on dirtbikes, some of them VERY powerfull two strokes. And your right that I didn't want to lean to far, the edges of the tires were still 'wet'. I should have scrubbed them. That was a big mistake.

I did take them to court! They suspended the fine! lol

HKNinja: I don't smoke cigs, drink ANY alcohol, smoke weed or take any other drugs. I work out 5 times a week. I think it's a far shot to say I'm less healthy than most....

COOTER: While I agree, I would rather them say what they think than not! Then I get to rebuttle! Lmao!

Dragking: This is true. Tell me not to! I will tell you no! LOL Although I feel our rights are slipping away from us, I would rather not get into politics ;)

It MAY fit....but I think the mounting shape is a teensy bit different on the 14R...you could try it and see.Maybe check out the part numbers on cheapcycleparts or something....to me...the stalk/foot didn't look quite the same...but......

Wait a minute.I was prescribed steroids a few times, prendesone to help healing.Ony problem is I'm diabetic and my sugar numbers shot off the charts. But I wouldn't take them for weightlifting.I bought Arnolds encyclopedia for weightlifting.Helped me with starting out.

I joined a gym yesterday with a years membership.Used to lift before and cardio. Now I just lay around and gain weight. When I lifted I was 205 now I'm 264 and I lost 8 pounds.I hope you get better buddy and sorry about your crash. As a veteren of several crahes I can relate.I broke 3 ribs 17 years ago when I got life flighted.Have no idea what happened.Cops found me face down in a ditch, bike in the trees.Broken internal stuff sucks.

^^There you have it right there.

I plead no contest. I DID technically break the law, even though I landed in GRASS, and nothing got hurt.
I basically told the judge that no-one witnessed the accident besides myself, there was no property damage, I wasn't exeeding posted speed limits, I signed the ticket under the influence of Fentanyl, and Hydromorphone, two drugs more powerfull than heroin itself. Therefore I was not technically conscious during my signature. I also said it was an act of God, etc, etc, standard bullshit.

He took a deep breath, and said, "Joshuah, I sentance you to a $25 fine, of which I suspend untill further notice. Please, be carefull out there."

The bailiff was super pissed! He told me to just pay it, because I "wasn't going to get out of it"...
