how do i install a chain??
06/30/11 7:24 PM

If anyone could please tell me how to install a chain that would be a big help. I just streached my bike 10 inches and during the installation i left the old chain hanging so i could connect the new one to the old one and just pull it through. i let my son cut the chain because working on the bike is our bonding time well i didnt let him know to just let the chain hang after cutting so he wound up pulling the chain all the way off. i cant see the front sprocket and im totally clueless as to how i would run the new one. Thanks in advance!

OOPS...first...WELCOME!Glad yer here.I would say the only way now is to remove the sprocket cover....hassle as that is.Well, not TOO bad.DO NOT REMOVE THE SLAVE.Leave that attached.Remove your 4(or 5) bolts holding the cover.Pull that away(attach somewhere right there with some tape or something to hold it out of the way).Re-route your chain.Transmission in neutral.Be very careful to NOT overtighten those cover bolts. And pay attention to which bolt goes where.Mark them if you have to.They are different lengths.Easy Peasy.

Be careful at the end there when you re-install the cover.Make sure the wiring and such is going through the "cutout" on the cover(you'll see it)You don't want to pinch any wires between the engine case and the cover.Check your "overflow" tube as well...the one with the clear bulb on it.Make sure she's going into the correct route. It does NOT have to be sticking out past the fairing tip there.Just sitting right in that little pocket of the fairing around the tip.The hose goes ABOVE the water pump hose, and beneath the slave cylinder.

..............See where he hoses and wiring are going through the cutout?

zMake sure the kid pulls the cover, laces the chain through the swing arm and all that. Rookie mistake, but dad had that chain covered, kid! You owe dad a few lawn mows for that one.

It is not necessary to pull new chain through on the old. If yiu remove the sprocket cover, it is very easy.

^^^CLICK THIS

There it is, step 1,2,3,4 remove sprocket cover. Might read some of the conversation (or ask for info here) about not removing the clutch slave cilynder. Think a few guys said that it was possible to just remove the cover with the slave still on it. Think thety said only the long screw in the CSC needs to be removed?? Well read the thread. There is other info about connecting the chain.

That is awesome that you work on the bike with the kid.

^^SEe blue has you covered on the CSC issue. Also that is good advice to watch carefully for routing of hoses and wires so as to not pinch under the sprocket cover. I started to pinch my Autotune wire when I reinstalled.

you guys are awesome thanks for the quick response. Im pretty good at turning wrenches but this is my first bike and i got it about a month ago and ive never touched a bolt on a bike before. It seems like i spend more time adding things to it than riding it. With that being said do you think its a good idea to do it myself or have a shop do it?? I really dont like paying for labor if i can do it myself. Thanks for the pics and all the info guys!

to think they wanted 250.00 for labor where i went to put the extension blocks on. it would have taken me 40 minutes total then my son pulled the chain through lol i could kick him in his little nuts if he wasnt 11 i prob would have lol but it was a learning experiance for both of us so its all good

Yep...the cover has the speed sensor in it right there...yep.You don't need to remove that either.

You know...IF you're really not comfortable working on yer bike,at least SOME of it...probably best to have someone do it...maybe watch what they're doing, how they're doing it.Things can appear real simple sometimes...and end up being a total nightmare. But if you feel like things are something you could do...may as well enjoy and go for it.I think most of us here have had bikes before...that definitely helps...ya.But I NEVER worked on a bike as much as I have my Ninja. Not to "fix" things, but general maintenance.I mean, regular chores and parts swaps and such. The bodywork can be a bit "challenging" sometimes...just gotta go easy and don't force anything into place unless you actually can "see" how it needs to be assembled.
Gotta get ya a Service Manual here real quick.Don't want to break yer new ride!Just pay attention to how things are coming off and apart...put em back the same way...everything so far on my bike has assembled back as it was fairly simply.I've not had any "leftover" bolts or anything in 4 years. Not bad considering I'm no mechanic! But I do read that service manual BEFORE and DURING if I'm not 100% sure how something needs to be worked on.If ya need to tag something to remember something about it...you should.Pretending to know everything about your bike is askin for PROBLEMS.I know.

This forum and guys here know their shi& alright.Lots of seriously good procedures and such here.Ask away...no one's gotta thrash ya for takin care of yer baby. There are no dumb questions.

You will find a possible "several" ways to perform one operation. The book is kinda,well...in some things...overkill.You'll see as you go along with yer bike.My mechanic told me....just a few weeks ago.I asked him something about "longevity" and MY bike's present condition. He was pretty stoked that I had just at 45,000 miles, and how she was in such good condition. He mentioned that taking things apart...you know, like cleaning chains and stuff....maintenance stuff, removing wheels to bring to him for tire changes.Stuff like that...was actually way better for the overall life of parts cause they're at least being checked and "serviced" everytime something is removed or whatever.I hadn't really thought of it that way...but it made sense.Whenever I remove my wheels for a new tire,I always check the bearings...grease a tad ,and reinstall my wheels. You know, kinda simple stuff. But my bearings and such are virtually "new" looking.Seals are fine.Everything is good with my bike.So doing this stuff yourself if you feel you can is a really good way to have a sweet safe ride.

I know...I talk too much.Think it's great you workin with your son on yer bike.Really cool.

wow that took all of about 5 minutes. Okay you guys were both helpful but if people ask in the future alls you have to do is remove the four sprocket cover bolts and one of the clutch slave cylinder bolts which it is the one at the top next to the bleeder valve rooks info told me to remove the whole cylinder but if you use common sense the long clutch slave cylinder bolt is the only one you need to remove. If you did remove the whole thing it would only take about an extra 2 minutes but then you take the risk of loosing fluid and i believe you would have to bleed it when you are done. Thanks for the great advice guys im sure you just saved me quite a few bucks. i may be back lol ive got a bunch of stuff coming for the bike i ordered a double bottle nos kit and purge system and im willing to bet thats going to be a pain in the ass.

...sounds to me like you know your way around enough to be wrenching on your own bike. I had just a very little experience doing some basic stuff wrenching on automobiles. Never wrenched on a bike. I consider myself to be "still learning." I wouldn't a shop do the work for me though. Not easy to find reliable work and way too expensive.

I will have to ask you some questions some day.

now i ran into another problem today my chain came in the mail and its long enough but it doesnt seem to sit in the front sprocket right on top of it i told them to send me the clip for it because i have no idea to press it. I guess my question is when i tighten the chain will it sit on the sprocket right?? and how can i do the chain link myself? Thanks again.

This is why you don\'t run a clip style master link...

You need a tool to press a rivot link. This is the one I have:

*MOTORCYCLE CHAIN CUTTER BREAKER RIVETING RIVET TOOL*

There are nicer ones, but I've done 3 chains with it... works well.

Not my bike... just passing on the info.

As far as the chain not sitting on the sprocket... I dunno... Is it the correct pitch? Should be 530.

Pic would help.

Will only work if you replace both sprockets with 525 pitch ones... I don't recommend it... not on a zx14.

Any moto shop should have a 530 chain in store. If you're running factory gearing, you'll need 116 links.

Where you at?... Maybe a forum member has a spare... If you're in western Washington state, I can hook ya up.

ugh the picture didnt post is there a special way to do it

Thread: New image upload method

Or you can link them to a host site like Photobucket.com
But don't need a pic now. If chain is 525 and sprockets are 530, we now know the problem.

thanks for all the help so far dogo

the reason im chaing the chain is because i yesterday i installed 10 inch extensions on the swing arm so the stock chain wont do. this sucks so bad i could kill the fruitcake that sold me this chain i even made sure to ask if it would work. If youre going to sell something you should know something about it its going to take foreverto ship it back and get the new one

Gotcha... It is frustating...but shit happens... try not to sweat the small stuff.
I'd take off the extensions, pick up a new 530 masterlink, and still make the weekend ride.
Put the extensions on when you get the chain exchanged.

A little too far for me to help ya out... lol

dogo thats a good idea i didnt even think f that so a local shop should have a 530 master link?? i just ordered the chain breaker you showed me. do you think if i got the clip master link it would hold up for the weekend i dont wanna wind up like the pic you showed me??? Please say yes lol. one more question big guy whats the torq spec for the axle nut?? My next project im starting next week im 6'7" 300 lbs so my legs are a little cramped on the bile so im getting quarter in thick steel plates and making like an adapter for the foot peg plates im going to cut them in a cool design the send them to a shop the next town over and have them powder coated. also i made a mold of the seat cover cowell and made a pretty sick wing i gotta find out how to take pics of it im pretty sick with fiberglass i think youll be impressed its taking a lot of hard work
