Yep...the cover has the speed sensor in it right there...yep.You don't need to remove that either.
You know...IF you're really not comfortable working on yer bike,at least SOME of it...probably best to have someone do it...maybe watch what they're doing, how they're doing it.Things can appear real simple sometimes...and end up being a total nightmare. But if you feel like things are something you could do...may as well enjoy and go for it.I think most of us here have had bikes before...that definitely helps...ya.But I NEVER worked on a bike as much as I have my Ninja. Not to "fix" things, but general maintenance.I mean, regular chores and parts swaps and such. The bodywork can be a bit "challenging" sometimes...just gotta go easy and don't force anything into place unless you actually can "see" how it needs to be assembled.
Gotta get ya a Service Manual here real quick.Don't want to break yer new ride!Just pay attention to how things are coming off and apart...put em back the same way...everything so far on my bike has assembled back as it was fairly simply.I've not had any "leftover" bolts or anything in 4 years. Not bad considering I'm no mechanic! But I do read that service manual BEFORE and DURING if I'm not 100% sure how something needs to be worked on.If ya need to tag something to remember something about it...you should.Pretending to know everything about your bike is askin for PROBLEMS.I know.
This forum and guys here know their shi& alright.Lots of seriously good procedures and such here.Ask away...no one's gotta thrash ya for takin care of yer baby. There are no dumb questions.
You will find a possible "several" ways to perform one operation. The book is kinda,well...in some things...overkill.You'll see as you go along with yer bike.My mechanic told me....just a few weeks ago.I asked him something about "longevity" and MY bike's present condition. He was pretty stoked that I had just at 45,000 miles, and how she was in such good condition. He mentioned that taking things apart...you know, like cleaning chains and stuff....maintenance stuff, removing wheels to bring to him for tire changes.Stuff like that...was actually way better for the overall life of parts cause they're at least being checked and "serviced" everytime something is removed or whatever.I hadn't really thought of it that way...but it made sense.Whenever I remove my wheels for a new tire,I always check the bearings...grease a tad ,and reinstall my wheels. You know, kinda simple stuff. But my bearings and such are virtually "new" looking.Seals are fine.Everything is good with my bike.So doing this stuff yourself if you feel you can is a really good way to have a sweet safe ride.
I know...I talk too much.Think it's great you workin with your son on yer bike.Really cool.
