You don't have SpeedoHealer on there, do ya?

If so, dry out the inline plugs down at the speed sensor wire connector lead.

1. Find the speed sensor on the engine sprocket cover on left side of the bike. Follow the wire from the speed sensor to the black connectors. This is the speed sensor coupler (indicated by white pointer with black C). Make sure you have the right connectors. There is another black electrical connector right above the speed sensor coupler.

Look for these. You will have the white inlines if you have a SpeedoHealer or similar device. Otherwise just the blacks:

If no speedoHealer, you might try disconnecting the OEM connectors and drying them. I have only heard of trouble with the Speedo healer inline connectio. I had a brief problem very similar to yours and it seemed to clear itself after a few hours just lettingthe bike dry. Possibly you have a related problem even with the OEM connectors.

no speed healer...the connectors are black on black...I'm going to disconnect them and leave them disconnected for about 12 hours or so. Is there any selected method to clean them?

So I pulled them a part....(not an easy task for someone with hands like mine) and I didn't see any moisture...just a lot of dusk and grains.....I blew it out with pressure, I will let it stay disconnected overnight. Any other solutions on how to get them cleaned better?

teensy little flat file?IDK...never needed to;)If I might ask...WHAT is the silver looking wire sticking out of the harness there just to the right in the upper pic?Looks like someone cut that grey harness tape right there and pulled that wire up and maybe cut it?Why I wouldn't know...but it does look cut?????(to me)

I'd say just what you did. I'm not aware of any other thing that could be done. I wouldn't spray anything i there to help dry it out because that might damage the tape. It does look kind of dirty. Dust can cause a short to. I hope this is it and your problem is solved.

I'm lost, what silver wire?

Grn's talking about that wire that peeks out between the rubber air box drain hose and the dark gret painted piec of frame in the top pic.

I see it in the second pic and it looks like it is a separate bundle of wires and they look bent over, not cut.

bigjay, I hope the problem is solved after a good cleaning of the contacts. i don't think it would hurt to gently swab the connectors out with denatured alcohol on a Q-tip. That will evaporate rapidly and cut help cut any grease film if you have that in there. rubbing alcohol is 70% water so i'd stay away from that. Other solvents may be too strong.

Hook that baby up and see if she's fixed.

Doesn't your ECU code for a bad sensor....it should shouldn't it?Codes for everything else!I'd check your manual for the 'DFI service codes'...see if there's one in there for the speedo....before ya go and buy one(been there, done that). You could unplug that speedo sensor...pull it off(might not have to totally pull it off...just remove from the clutch housing so it's not grounding or something. You should have a listed amount of resistance or whatever for that particular sensor in the DFI section....check the continuity...see if it's shorting in that length of cable/plug.At least you'd know if THAT is actually failing.Should be able to unplug it at the connector...then test it.

You say you cleaned the sensor...you mean...you removed the piece on the clutch cover deal and cleaned off the magnet?Sometimes those get grit on em..and they give weird speed readings and gear position readouts.Might try that if ya didn't.Easy to do.(you may have said you did that already...sorry if ya did).

Hate to say it jay.. You might need to relent and take the bike in. Installing a new speedo sounds like a lot of wire pulling. The wires may intermingle with others. ..and you still do not know if that would be the problem. Perhaps it is something as simple as a fuse?

If you bring the bike in to the shop, at least you will know they did the work because your speedoo is either gonna work or it isn't.

Also, I would not hesitate to steer you to the guys at ZX-14.com

Lots of racers there who have much wrenching experience. I go there for tech advice pretty often and have good luck.

figured it out about a month ago, never posted it. It was the wiring with the alarm system that made the speedometer go crazy. Took the alarm off, speedometer worked perfectly. Thanks for your help and guidance.

Turtle tried to tell you this is a closed loop bike. Only wants the frequency it recognizes. Accessories come along an oops, mother teapot loves those store boughts is you be buying bulletproof sensors that simply bye-passed the original frequency = NOLTT

2012 ZX-14R: Last night after washing the bike I took it for a short ride to complete the drying process and about 100 yards down the road the speedometer was reading zero. Soon after the check engine light and KTRC light turned on and the LCD display (Power) & (KTRC level) started flashing. As soon I could I pulled over, shut off the engine and performed a re-start. No change. Completed my loop (9 miles) and returned the bike to the garage.

After dinner I went out and restarted the bike - no warning lights or flashing LCD.

Water on the wheel speed sensor?

Same thing happened to my 08. After a wash. Speedo went to 130 when I was doing about 40. Buke started running verry rough, off and on. Speedo went to 0. Bike ran normal. Shut bike off vcame back 5 hours later started it up speedo/tach swept. Everything normal. Never happened again. I am very careful to avoid srpaying the left side were the speed sensor is.

All this time I have been thinking it is my Speedo Healer connections that go inline with the speed sensor lead.

You don't by chance have a SpeedoHealer on your bike? Probably not but you do have the connectors just like my 08.

Interesting...just spoke to Rook about this very thing.HOWEVER...mine is a 2013 ABS...and installing(temporarily)a 2012 ECU...it did the EXACT same thing while riding for about 10 minutes.EXACTLY....no water though;)

Shut er down at a store...came out...started her up...everything was fine.Rode about 10 minutes...BOOM...all those same things happened again(including MPG reading froze).Brought her home and parked her.Removed the 2012 ECU...
