Fairings and Fasteners
09/03/13 6:33 AM

Just noticed this weekend while putting a nice shine to my black pearl, and I noticed one of the lower fairing Fasteners is missing. WTF! I checked all the others and none were loose. Has anyone experienced this yet? It was there when I bought it, so it had to of worked is self out. I haven't taken that fairing off yet either. Now I gotta go down to the kawi shop and get a replacement.

Ya once I noticed that one missing, I'm obsessed now. I don't need pieces flying off at high speeds... like a nhra hotrod!

Today doing a little maint. Gunna check air filter and tighten the chain a touch and check all fasteners. Called the kawi shop and they have none. Gunna take a ride and go order it I guess. Says its $2.

Not surprised, on my 08 at the 1st service I noticed I was missing a couple of bolts and I know several other forum members have had the same thing... wish they were only $2, I think they charged me something like $15 for the 2 missing bolts (and probably new well nuts). Knock on wood, but I haven't had any go missing after I tightened them up a little bit.

Hmmm... Maybe a lite thread locker on them? A tiny drop off blue loctite on them perhaps.

I wouldn't put any threadlocker on a well-nut bolt(unless you can get to the other side to hold it when you try to loosen;)....if it's the bodypanel bolts...then yes...a teensy dab(maybe)...along with the black washers.

Yer gonna really be in deep shit if you locktight that wellnut and can't get to the backside....

Think I'll just try to make it a habit to check them frequently. Went thru it today. Found 2 more that were a loose. I found tomorrow's lunch in the air filter too. Some good crunchies in there.

Yeah, for the love of god don't use thread lock... if you over-torque the well nuts too much they can get stuck, since the nuts are just rubber that "grips" onto the fairing if it starts spinning you have to somehow get some pliers on the nut from behind (sounds bad no mater how you just read that) :)

I've had this issue myself you just have to keep an eye on every bolt. I alway buy a bag of Hardware when I buy a new bike.

When I use well nuts I use a small dab of crazy glue on the rubber to keep it from spinning and it comes off easy when you need to change them.
