Storage again
10/30/16 1:32 PM

Well...the 14R is away for the winter. I was going to tackle the plugs, but after getting to the point of pulling coils....I noticed the Idle Control valve sitting there. I unscrewed it off the frame mount. I found if you pull it down so that the large intake hose that goes in the air box has a lot of vacuum going in....so I put fogging oil through that rather than pulling coils off. Previous bike had vacuum caps on the carbs and I did the same thing but with a vacuum hose harness I made up. I did this until there was visible smoke from the exhausts and shut it down. Hope this is enough...but pretty sure it is.
Kind of wondering though about the right side fairing where there is that little tab that goes into the upper fairing under the head light that has a quick rivet through it....how the hell do you get that to go in properly? The problem I had was the small guard on the fairing cover for the radiator cap was interfering with getting the tab to go into where it should. Left side was tricky but do able...right hand side was damned near impossible.
Thanx..Ross

IMHO, I tend to just leave those things alone, start her up weekly to start the juices flowing as she anxiously awaits the Spring.

This surely must be a Gen2 thing. If that was a Gen1 I'd say you just dumped oil down the PAIR which would fog your exhaust valves and headers.

Hope this is enough...but pretty sure it is.

For a few years, proper fogging is beneficial. For a few months, not really necessart. That is what I have been told. I'd still do it for a few months but use old plugs. The oil will carbon them up. Also, I was told to turn the engine by hand. Running it will wash most oil out of the cylinders.

Hey Rook,
I just get paranoid about storing a bike. I fogged my old one. Decided to do the same again. In fact with my old bike the spring ritual was taking both front and rear suspension off and changing fork oil and greasing bearings etc.
Only 1,300 Km's on this one so change the oil and that is about it. The valve I put the fogging oil into is the Idle control valve...according to the Gen 2 manual I downloaded.
Will see how it runs in the spring....maybe will end up changing plugs anyway!
Any tips for plastic repair on the ZX?

Any tips for plastic repair on the ZX?

If its a tab that broke, epoxy and reinforce with an overlapping patch of ABS plastic that you might cut from an old CD case or other item. It's actually a lot less common these days than it was in years past. You might want to try using a heat gun to shape the patch but don't use that on the fairing.

I heard plastic welders work well but never tried one.

I'm the same way. Love to be nice to my bikes while they sleep.

The idle control valve is not on the Gen1. I imagine it goes to the throttle bodies which should go to the intake valves and then to the cylinders. I guess you probably got it pretty good. I would turn by hand next time. Seems like that would spread a nice coat over everything. probably best to shoot a squirt down each sparkplug hole and do the intake valves and who knows---why not the exhaust? The top end has a coat of oil on it already. I had planed to figure out a thorough fogging procedure one of these days.

Hub had some good fogging ideas here. I don't think anyone does it for just a few months and if they do it at all, I doubt anyone knows how effective it is. might be just one of those rituals. I will probably try it next fall.
