'09 Valve Cover Leak
12/29/12 9:01 AM

I came across this a couple of days ago. All set to enjoy my vacation by installing my PCV, blockoff plates, and change the oil to synthetic when I notice some oil buildup as I strip her down. Snatch the Maglite and get a birds eye and do some googling and sure enough it's a valve cover leak. I picked the bike up with 4,000 miles and now it's at about 6200, still under GTPP. I dropped it off at the local dealer and hope to hear back in a few days. I'm hoping by now that they can fix it for good the first time given the history of this issue.

The good news is that the bike runs like a beast with the LV slipons, gutted cat, and PCV with generic map. After the valve cover is sorted I'll pull the flies, install the block off plates, and get it tuned.

The only aesthetic changes I've made are the addition of a muzzy fender eliminator and a Puig double bubble with an MRA lip. The MRA rubber strip really finished off the Puig, otherwise the workmanship was pretty sloppy.

I was going to ask you where you got that screen! Nice finishing touch!
I had the same problem last year and I ordered "updated" parts, I believe the year was 09 maybe 10 not sure but the problem is fixed. I'm running full synthetic and although I'm burning some nothing is coming out of that side of the motor. You will be fine, just make sure they know what they're doing. There is good info on this website and you may be able to get some part numbers if you do enough

Thanks, I would not have been satisfied with the windscreen without it. It's one of those items that accumulates in the toolbox. This strip was from a 3rd gen ZX10 MRA screen.

I've read pages and pages on the valve cover leak and I'm hoping my dealer gets it right. They are pretty good folks and KHI should be fixing it properly by now. I'll post up what happens.

Jason where in FL do you live im in Cape Coral! My 2008 ZX-14 had the valve cove leak but I fixed it with some washers! There is also a shop here that adjusted my valves that I would recommend!

My 08 had the leak too. The washer trick improved the problem. It still leaks a bit. Rather than tighten it more than spec, I'm going to change the gasket, bolts and ringos (rubberized washers).

I'm in SE Florida and ride between Indian and River and Broward several times a week. I dropped the bike off at Riva in Pompano. They've treated me pretty good in the past.

Thanks Rook, your tutorials have been a real asset to me. This is a PITA I want the dealer to resolve. Oil on my motor turns me into Jack Nicholson in As Good as it Gets.

Update - I should have the bike back in a few days. It took a while because I dropped it off during the holidays and then it took a few days to get the parts. The part #'s they are placing under warranty are 11061-0196, 11061-0738, and 92055-0187. We'll see how it goes.

So that's gaskets and ring-o's. That confirms the bolts being the same, which is what my mechanic told me. I'm pretty sure you'll be kosher. Thanks for the update and let us know more, once she's up and running. Did they order parts from 09?

a-hem...uh.. I see 3 part #s here. What's the other thing they ordered if not bolts?
