I know this Gearing thig is a big subject but will ask all you 16 tooth guys to give your bikes a good run to 8tho and shift into second and then run the bike up to 8tho again. Now knock into (N), Hit kill switch. As you coast with engine off, listen. Please report if it sounds anything like a 17 tooth Front. I have repeated this test many times. Maybe I'm to fussy ?

Unfortunately anything with a 17 front you can't go over 42 on the rear without a longer than stock chain, and if the chain gets too much longer than stock you can't

I ran 17F with a 43R on a stock chain. The wheel was forward all the way. Only two threads of adjustment left. It was tight but it def can be done. I can't find the pics but I will keep looking. Cheers

Maybe you had a lot of chain stretch? What size tire. 190/50? was it worn? How close to swing arm was it? Basically, I'm wondering if a new 190/55 would fit in the swing arm if you pulled the axle all the way forward in the slots.

Best pic I can find of where my axle set with 17/43 gearing on the stock 116 link chain. I was able to get the 43t on there when the axle was adjusted just past the 3rd mark back, about 3k miles of stretch, with the stock 41t rear sprocket. With the axle at the adjustment in the pic I had just enough room to fit a 190/55 tire w/o rubbing the swingarm. Although, the tire in that pic is a 190/50 Pirelli.

Think I see where you are going with this, Rick... but I doubt someone is going to conduct that experiment for ya... especially since about 50% of the forum has their bikes stashed away for the winter. Just my opinion and preference here... but with a 530 pitch chain, the smallest front sprocket I like to run is a 17t.

Yup, valid point. I tooooo am snow bound and board. No sleds now. What do we talk about,,,, please break something.

Your post is most accurate. 17. Just hold it in your hand and wrap 16 around 530 chain,,,, close ok, but close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades lol

Maybe you had a lot of chain stretch?

Nope. 10,0000 kilo. I can't remember exactly(I posted this on the old forum) 3rd bar on adjusters rings a bell, I posted this on the forum. Wear marker at 3 me thinks. If you look pics you will see Each new tooth adds ABOUT 3/16 of adjustment slack lost, so Please study pics. I will guarantee 43 will fit if yo have at least 6000 miles of Man driving lol, or hand in your Man Card. LOL Rooook You will be fine, Yes ? Please answer. Yes

Not in the mood to break anything, but you feel free.

In the meantime we can discuss how beautiful my Christmas tree is this year.

There's two under the tree. A 42t for now, and a 43t for later. I'd rather have a 45t, but will hold out until it's time for a new chain.

Damn skippy she loves me! Actually, I didn't pay more for the polish, I payed less. $1200 (clearance) for the set. Woulda got black but woulda been $600-$700 more.
