Panty Tanty Dummy Spit Poo!
05/09/16 2:43 PM

Just moved my 2013 zx14r after a 5 day rest and there is a thin film of engine oil on the polished concrete garage floor, It come from the front of the motor somewhere.
About a 6" circle of oil.
Only done 20'000 kilometers on it :-(

Im trying to blame the BSA but that is in the other shed....Bugger.

Don't fret. It is probably the oil filter. Is there a hole in it? Is it loose like will it turn easy almost by hand? Or the oil drain plug loose? I suppose you checked those already. Could be the oring stuck last time you removed the filter and now you have 2 on there. That might cause a leak. Before you check that, see if you can find a trail coming from up higher. Is it running down the left headers all the way to the bottom of the bottom by the collector? Check under the heat blanket on the engine. Is there oil running down the LH side of the motor from the valve cover on the top? The gen 1 was notorious for valve cover leaks and i have personally observed that the valve cover bolts can loosen up if not torqued pretty close to spec. If so, oil will tend to leak most from the LH side of the valve cover. If it is severe enough to have dripped on the floor, it's prolly leaking all around the cover to some degree. Any of those things are fixable.

Are you sure the oil was not overserviced? That will cause oil to blow up to the air box and empty out of the air box drain tube (one of the rubber hoses in front of the shift lever if the gen2 has that setup). Did you run the bike a long time in hot weather and then shut down with a lot of gas in the tank? That has been known to cause the fuel tank breather to expel some goopy wax used to plug the hose for shipping / dealer storage. Comes from same area as air box drain. Looks like snot.

I doubt you have any damage, Maddy. Just a gasket needs to be replaced. bummer to need to do that at this point but nothing is broken.

For an easy first check on the valve cover leak, try wiping your finger around header #1 right where it bolts to engine. Valve cover leak is most pronounced right above at the front left corner of the valve cover. Oil naturally pools on the inside of the engine in that corner when the bike is on the side stand.

I just walked out to my bike and guess what I found on the floor? It was chain lube that dripped out of the sprocket cover. Did you lube your chain lately? I used the silicone stuff called Maxima Chain Guard. It's not the wax kind. It drips and flies all over. Easy to wipe off but it comes off the chain easy too.

So what was it, Maddy? You didn't haul that bike into the shop yet did you?

If you have trouble locating the exact point of leakage, remove the lower plastics, degrease ansd wash eveything and after it's dry, blow some baby powder all over the suspected leaky areas. The powder will show the first sign of a leak.

Not a bad idea but if it's leaking bad enough to drip on the floor, you should have no problem finding the trail once you tear off fairings--maybe even without.

So, was it head cover gasket?

My Bad , how embarrassing .
When i had the bike on the hoist i sprayed a lot of innox in the rear shock spring area, it pooled and when i put it on the side stand it all ran out.

Sorry guys, im just a girl, lol.

I had the same thing happen with chain lube. It collected under the sprocket cover and ran out when the bike was parked.
