tire damage opinions
08/17/14 8:50 AM

I was lubing my chain yesterday and inspected my tires. I found this.

The tire is not leaking air.
I don't know the depth. Probing it (gently) with a small screw driver it doesn't seem very deep.
The tire only has 2000 miles on it.

I am of course concerned with this damage especially considering high speed riding etc. Also if you know of any repair methods, if any, that would be great. Thanks for your input.

The crack is at the peak of the rain groove. The crack is at the center of the tire. You keep riding, that may stay where it's at and you'll see it disappear in a few thou. If it follows it to the core, still, that rubber melted into the cords and you'll never ride that bike to the cord anyway so have at it.

I found similar cracks in my OEM tire. Also found chips of rock or glass embedded. I Asked about it on the old forum and the response was don't worry about it. I rode that tire to 10,000 miles till the sipes were even with the tread on the center.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm glad you guys think it's ok, especially since it's so young. I'll keep an eye on it. I do recall hearing tire "pops" a couple times riding from riding over unseen objects. Probably when it happened. Hate those damn pops.

Low speed, stones flying out, probably. I bet you'll see more little slits as time goes on. I look pretty hard at my tires when new. I've seen those.

Should I be concerned about this?

Good excuse to get a PR4 ! LOL or whatever tire ... I thought the Metzler was ok, UNTIL I put on
the PR4, a HUGE difference ! Also the Metzlers where cupping, mand they still had plenty of tread
left, not a good feeling when coming out of a power curve or slide !

No burnout. Pleasantly worn out. There is rubber past the cords but not at this spot. The rubber would show a burned center and the cords should have been more torn up, so no.

Hub nailed it.....crazy to run it as long as I did! I'm now running Sportmax Q3's and will never go back to Michelin. Love these Dunlops that have carbon fiber in the sidewalls. As far as that Michelin goes, too many spirited launches.

Slow, not really. Low would concave the tire's patch more and salvage the center more. Look at the leaf or whatever is stuck at the lower right of the tire. The groove is still deep or if it was low, not so deep and the wear would be more there when low. That's how I read it.

Continental just recalled 180,000 tires for this type of separation.

Someone replied when is Dunlop going to recall 500,000 of their Q3s for this!?

That's not a split...it just worn down to the cord after around 8k and numerous spin-outs.
