heip me set up an 08

hi guy new to the site and fuel injection. read alot about maps and such. no miles on bike yet yosh carbon slip ons and k&n filter bike is apart for paint and powder coating. I am wondering do I need a power commander with these mods and what about and ignition retarder. Will the ecu compensate for the extra intake and exhaust?

Doubt you need anything with either mod. Bikes already a little rich from what I've read. Slip ons don't appear to make enough of a difference and air filters negligible.

If you play with your ignition (mechanicaly) Lots to know, any more than 4 degrees ECU will see it and bring you back 9(safe Mode) . If you want a much better explaination , Ask Hub . This is his back yard .

I generally agree with the other guys info. While a new filter and pipe will get you about 10 on the top end, the bottom end A/F hit, which is notably there on a full OEM bike, will be there after your mods, and a little more pronounced. I feel the only real thing the PC III or the like will do is 'smoooooth' out the feel.. and get that A/F spike in the lower RPM's a bit flatter. Closer to 13.1 or what ever your choice.

When it is all done and well, the A/F will model, for normal 'dynotune' tuners, 13.1 across the RPM tune range... at least that is what they are 'trained' to go after, unless you tell them otherwise.

This is an untuned run, fully OEM bike. You can see it is on the rich side for the most part (more rich than 13.1 that is):

But with a good tune you will get a rise in the lower RPM TQ area a little. Worth the money for a tune.... I don't think so, unless you want the acceleration 'smoooth'... Some tuners have a dickens of a time getting that small RPM portion 'flat', but it can get kinda close. Worth chasing it.. I dont think so. The rest of the RPM range A/F is much easier to flat line.

but as you know, this bike is so quick, you are not in one spot in the RPM range for long! And I think Kawasaki did a great job with having the bikes 'tune' about spot on. Changing the timing to 4 degree advance netted me about a 2 HP increase when I tested out the muzzy plate at the dyno.... not much change. I think that goes along well with how well Kawasaki did on the tune on these bikes.

Unfortunately, that area you have highligted is where many people spend their time riding while commuting. bad a/f ratio at the 3k to 4k area makes for a horrible throttle response while cruising in traffic and or bad gas mileage if its to rich.

JDC and Hoopie could have not cleaned the backyard up any better. I could not explain it any more clear is re-read both posts is toast to those two = 1+. Rich is Smooth. Rich is Gastation hopping and not riding.

thanks everyone , I really didn't think it would be a big deal but you guys seemed to be well informed. I will be putting it on the dyno in the middle of june and will post the results, my 01 zrx was pretty near perfect after I jetted it.

Hoopie sez:

Actually it's not as bad as you might think Hoopie. I borrowed a bone stock '08 for a test ride to compare to my flies out '06 and the only time I noticed the 3-4K emisions trough was in first gear and only at ridiculously low speed. It felt like a hesitation or flat spot. I think pulling flies and remapping on an '08 would do the trick to clean up throttle response and tune any lag out.
