Won't rev over 3k... unless...
06/23/16 1:30 PM

07 zx14 .. Won't rev over 3k 99.9% of the time unless stator is unplugged... stator ohms out perfect, puts out perfect ACV, nothing to ground, no codes (battery light comes on sometimes n voltage reading on LCD changes sporadically (12.1-14v) .. customer changed reg/req already, wiring all looks good... any ideas ?? Thx

Not a clue? The oil light might light up, but disconnect the gps sensor found under the left side throttle body. Triangle plug is the speed sensor, square plug is the gps/oil light... pull that to see if the engine revs. I'm stumped sans ['without' replacing] a new stator/rotor as a set.

It's a game of [sensor] wires disconnected. If the stator drags the engine, some magnetism is dragging something down? It's increasing the mag to almost makes it want to stop like points north sort of speak. Change the battery?

VicThing - with it unplugged it runs perfect both ways....

Hub - not quite sure what ya mean.. i can say that yes it drags it down just a touch when plugged in.. battery load tests perfect and starts bike fine (drops to around 11 under load)

How old is the battery? If it's dropping to 11 v under load it has a problem. These bikes need a good battery to function properly.

Hmm was always told 10.5v is limit... it hits 11 n holds when load testing... but still doesn't explain why voltage is all over the place n why it runs fine w stator unplugged...

Your battery is about to die, car or bike ~12.3 V in the lower limit

I kinda eliminated the battery as a problem by hooking the truck battery up to the bike via cables.. should eliminate any low voltage problem ...

Sorry mate, I meant riding the motorcycle. Revving freely in neutral can often be quite different than revving freely riding (or driving in the case of a car).

Hmm was always told 10.5v is limit...

Here are the book limits for a static battery:
12.6v = good
12.0v = charge
Under 12v = change battery

Battery static reads?

it hits 11 n holds when load testing...

After load test and wait 15min say... static reads?

but still doesn't explain why voltage is all over the place n why it runs fine w stator unplugged...

Let me go thru 3 jobbers in the loop"

Battery = 14.2 ~ 15.1v is turning on the winkers, high beam, brake light on; where is the voltage reading when up and down revs occur?

Vo/Reg = This: captures AC/separates the excess voltage/sends those 2 separate voltages to ground and the other to the battery.

Stator/rotor = This makes AC. Or magnetism creates heat so you warm up the engine to test the stator. The output should read 51v @ 4,000 rpm. Pull the stator wire out of the vo/reg, set the meter to 250v. Those wires are the 3 yellows going into the vo/reg so meter prong stays in one female pin, the black meter lead swaps the other 2 yellows. That says all 3 of those pins have to put out 51v each or the stator is junk.

Troubleshoot:
Batt ~ 12.6v = Not the battery
Vo/Reg ~ Does not exceed 15.2v = Not the vo/reg
Stator ~ 50v = Is the problem.

Rare:
Is a new OEM vo/reg = Possible
Is the new vo/reg = chinese made and bought from ebay, but nothing mentioned having a new vo/reg thrown at it and still a problem.

Ok so let's get down to brass tacks. There's either a short cuicuit somewhere in the wiring when the stator is plugged in, or the stator/vr is faulty and not doing it's job right. My guess is stator.

I'd say if you follow Hub's troubleshooting info you'll get there. That's some top notch help right there. I can only guess.

ill have to check that and see what it does after a load test..

Battery = 14.2 ~ 15.1v is turning on the winkers, high beam, brake light on; where is the voltage reading when up and down revs occur?

like i said its all over the place when running... jumps from 11.1v up to 14.v at idle, never really changes when revving bike..

That says all 3 of those pins have to put out 51v each or the stator is junk.

yep ive done all the standard tests on the charging system and everything shows good.. OHM stator, ground test stator, ACV output (50v+)but ill double check that. i know they were all bout the same..

Troubleshoot:
Batt ~ 12.6v = Not the battery
Vo/Reg ~ Does not exceed 15.2v = Not the vo/reg
Stator ~ 50v = Is the problem.
Rare:

yep its new, more than likely its a chinese reg/req but ill have to ask..

thanks

HUB.... ok so its def. not the stator .. 100+ACV at 5k on all 3.. nothing to ground etc...
battery sees sporadic charging . so gotta be the new REG/REQ that he put on...

Maybe i am just a simpleton but if you unplug the stator and it revs then i would have just put a new stator on. Obviously there is an internal short of some kind. The volt meter is only a method to confuse the plain and obvious in this instance. That meter tells you what u ask it, and we are lucky to think we can interpret its findings. However you will never find the answer if you are not asking the right question.

Lol ok darkarcher.... I would think the same thing if all tests didn't show the stator as good... I did all the same tests recommended before coming here.. just making sure I didn't forget or miss something.. if the reg/req isn't allowing output to
run/charge the systems it's not gonna rev either... I have the customer grabbing another reg/req to make sure he didn't buy a dud...

I've read a number of times where owners of the ZX14's cousin, the C14, have had questionable connections in the area of the battery ... either on the battery terminals themselves ... and specifically lately the battery-ground-to-frame connection. I'd check and clean 'em all, though. Even some almost brand new Kawi's have these probs. Voltage fluctuations can cause some real whackiness in modern bikes and cars.

Please let us know what the solution ends up being ... and good luck.

extrapolator... actually I have cleaned n greased the ground... looking at manual I guess there's 3... I'll have to pull tank again n find/clean the others..
lol you guys will be the 2nd to know if I get this pegged...hoping the new reg/req will fix it..

hoping the new reg/req will fix it..

Electrically speaking, anything goes on that bike you pay the OE price. Look at what you are holding now if you bought over the net, used or aftermarket, you just ate more money if you just played it smart. Now, you broke even either way if not a few dollars ahead of the game; 'you get WATT you pay for.'
