Got a Glitch Gremlin
04/12/10 1:09 PM

I just added a DynoJet ignition module to my bike. I got it from Ivan along with a map to maximize ignition performance. From the first test run I've had a glitch...
At 6000 RPM and at 7000 RPM I get a warning light and it says FI error on the readout. It only lasts till 6200 and 7200 RPMs as I accelerate. The code doesn't stay around long enough to call it up in the self diagnosis mode, and I can't determine what the code would be. Changing maps has no effect. I've checked and cleaned every connection.
DynoJet says without the code they can't help, other than if I mail it to them.
Ivan keeps saying he wants to help but so far his only suggestion was to check the ground connection to the frame. One reason I decided to make this upgrade is having the impression that I'd get good tech support from Ivan. But even with all his knowlege of the system he has had no suggestions as to how to troubleshoot it!

The only thing that corrects the glitch is to remove the ignition module from the system.

Any suggestion which leads to a cure will receive a BIG Attaboy from me.

Sharkey is your firmware up to date ?

Can you see you ignition table installed ?

What boxes do you have checked in the PC-3 software located under enviroment options ?

The only thing that corrects the glitch is to remove the ignition module from the system.

Work through it. You will be glad you did.

I need some new booties too teas then. Then if that is the case, we have all 4 of the correct wires going to each wire side to that spark stick? Oh wait! Is this the clip on the piggy connectors or is this old style you individually wire each spark stick wire?

I would either check the wire input of each connector color matching said OEM colors, or maybe one input wire is fitted into an output wire? You have zip problem disconnected. That says it is the unit and possibly a wire matched to the wrong in/outputs.

Last is a bad ground. Better ground is to use a sprocket cover bolt with a crush type star washer that bites into the eye hook and engine case.

Romans...the firmware is the most current for sure. The environmental options I have checked are as follows;
->show splash screen on program start
->show confirmation dialog after successfully sending a map
->reset power commander buttons when sending map
->save backup file before sending map to power commander
It also has multiple choice;
Save map on exit ->always
upon connect ->open with power commander map

I really don't know what most of this means. I've never before seen a reference to a "splash screen" and there is no mention of it in the Control Center Software User Guide! That guide is truly bogus. It describes the obvious but doesn't really have instructions to help you use it...other than Take it to your nearest authorized Power Commander Dyno Center.

Hubster...I've checked the stick coil connectors and remade the ground connection a couple times. The thing is that it isn't really what you would call an Intermittent short because it isn't truly random. It is pretty well defined in that I get the FI error only at the two engine speeds 6000 and 7000 RPM. If I stay at one of those RPMs the error will persist but at 6100 or 5990 it's gone. And it happens no matter whose map I'm running.

..... ..... ..... ..... ..... .....

It only lasts till 6200 and 7200 RPMs as I accelerate.
"I just installed..." Let's take one step back before the code spike.

Remove the hot (+) side of the PC. My experience tells me reading all your Pee See Problems, one is a bad ground, or a bad loop with the PC. Obviously a bad ground will cure the loop of the PC. But a glitch like the phantom code spike at a certain rpm range is strange.

Back to 'bulletproof' and see if she still is? So, off goes the hot side to remove the loop out of the DFI. Ground is ground. But the battery to PC to ground is still attached to ground. Ground is no harm, no foul. But to still have the hot bleed completing a circuit to the bike's coil ground is still in play you remove the PC ground alone.

Do you kind of see the box still in the variable, trying to close down on an either/or [which side (+)/(-)] PC wire? Now take it for a ride we are back to bone stock. Slam that rpm once more, see if bullet comes back on line.

Do you see your ignition table located at the top like the one in this photo. Have you had any luck?

Are you sure the X to Y of the grid to TPS is layered over each other in position? Remember, 'the darryle drive-ability,' squared away some glitch when he lined up something? Without the unit in hand, I have no clue where to start? See if someone cannot guide you on that or do we have installation instructions for that answer? Try that.

Did you ever find out the problem? I just installed my ignition module and had a similar issue. I uploaded the ignition modules firmware to the PCIII. The bike rand but like crap. After a phone call, I installed the ignition module firmware and reinstalled the correct firmware back to the PCIII. Runs awesome now!
