Cross-coast trip: looking for advice, meet-ups, free lodging :P
06/18/09 10:58 AM

Hi all,

My roommate and I may take a trip from Nashville, TN to Sacramento, California (got a friend 45min north of there) at the end of summer. We're trying to figure out the cost, but that will vary widely on what we want and can do. The idea is this: take a car with a trailer for 2 bikes, travel to first destination between TN and Cali and meet up there with some peeps from this forum (and maybe other forums, too) for some riding. Dine out/sleep, and ride to next destination closer to CA next day. Rinse/repeat until we reach California. There we got a buddy that will ride with us and let us stay at his house. This way we experience several new states and ride beautiful roads in several spots in the US, yet have our car to store clothes/gear.

So, if you live between Nashville, TN and Sacramento, California and would like to ride with us and you got space (floor will do just fine hehe) for 2 weary travelers, please reply! This will help us map-out the route, gas costs, and how much time we need. Then we can decide if we can afford this. We'll probably try to go through CO and the Grand Canyon, but if we don't find anyone who lives there, we might change route. This is a long trip and if we have to stay at hotels every night, we just can't afford it :( We'll buy you beers if you let us stay!

I will be taking my 08 ZX 14 SE and my roommate just replaced his old bike with an 04 CBR600RR. We are average riders, young but drive maturely and safely, although if it's safe to hit the twisties, I'd love to do that, too. He's German but permanent resident, I'm originally from Ukraine (my 7th year in the States) so this will be a huge opportunity for us to experience more US culture and such. I never really been west of TN.

Here's our default route - if you're within an hour south or north of this and willing to help out/ride with us, let me know what city/state you're in!

Click here for the default route - starts in Nashville, off to Sacramento, then San Diego, back to TN. This will change as we modify the route to stop by and meet those of you kind enough to give us some shelter.

Current pending dates are end of August - first/second week of September.

Hope to find some co-riders and meet some of you,
Alex

Last edit: added Grand Canyon to the route.

I'm tracking all 4 forums that this is posted on, but if you have kawiforums.com membership, please post there. But if not, feel free to reply here. Thanks!

UPDATE: Seems I'll be dropping the cage off at fellow rider's place in Phoenix AZ on the way to CA, and riding just the bikes to CA. I'm really all out on cash, and neither me nor my roommate have any bags for ZX 14 or CBR600... if you live in Phoenix or on the way to Phoenix from Nashville and want to borrow some bags, I'd pay you some rent on them or w/e, then bring back as we head back to Nashville. Please let me know.

Heres an idea
Instead of trying to find buddy's house's to stay at

Ask the Babes for places to stay at .. AND WORK IN EXCHANGE

mow the grass ..plow the field.. trim the bushes .. You know Boy.. didn't ur father tell you these things

LOL Nice ideas. I know the value of working hard, Bad, mind you I am from second-world country. But on this trip, all I have time for and can offer in exchange is your favorite drink and dinner for letting me and my roommate stay. Well that and stories and hopefully a start to a friendship :) I welcome riders to my place if anyone crosses Nashville on a trip like this and so am looking for people with similar attitude!

Grass Valley is about 30 min north of I80 just outside Sacramento. It's usually hot around that time and I've got a an extra room & swimming pool too.
My wife isn't much of a rider so I was toying with the idea of a trailer and going to other locals to tour around. Have you done any of this already?

Ha-ha, nice Doug. I wish I had a helmet nearly as cool as on that guy behind the driver.

Sharkey, I really appreciate the offer, and nice paint btw. Right now we're kind of leaning more towards the East Coast trip instead, but it's all still up in the air. He wants to do East Coast all on bikes, which sounds good, but will be hell for him in practice b/c covering 300+ mi/day on CBR 600 without bar risers ain't as fun as it sounds. We'll see. I'd prefer the trailer and West Coast if you ask me! :P

We haven't gone to other locals yet with trailer... although if they are locals, not sure what's the point of trailer he-he. Honestly I owned a motorcycle for just year and a half, and moved to Nashville around the same time. Then I bought my house a year ago and so much has been going on since then that I didn't even ride that much. I needed practice on my own so wasn't ready to hang out with people who are a lot more comfortable in twisties than me. So I just now started going to bike events and reaching out to locals more. I will be meeting some peeps from another forum on July 19-21 and then hopefully more riders from across the country at Deal's Gap on July 28-Aug 1.

Hey Bad, if we cross TX (unlikely), I'll be glad to stop by and watch you trim that tree as I sit on your recliner and sip on some tea. I assume that's what you meant. ;)

In other news, my ZX 14 arrives tonight!!!! WOOHOOOO
