Gas Cap
04/30/09 10:59 AM

Is there a remedy for the annoying whistle that emanates from the gas cap.
Every time I stop somewhere I have to here "hey, what's that weird noise coming from your bike".
I'm tired of explaining to everyone "no, it's not gonna blow".

Thanks,
Chris

take the key and open the cap to relieve the pressure

I understand the pressure in the tank needs to be relieved, just seems the 14 is the only one in the parking lot that makes so much noise doing it.

Curious if the aftermarket caps do the same thing http://www.schnitzracingstore.com/catalogs/catalog.asp?prodid=5128837&showprevnext=1

all bikes do it. my 650, the 636, and the 14 all do it. most people only replace their caps with aftermarkets just for looks.

None of my other bikes cbr1000, cbr600, or my sons r6 do it to the extent of the 14, like it's got a flippin' clarinet reed stuck in there.

it's a bigger tank so it has more surface area to collect heat.

My wifes ZX-6R does it also. But in a slightly different tone. Sounds really strange when they're parked next to each other...

Both my previous bikes (Vulcan cruisers) also hissed occasionaly. Doesn't bother me in the least, I pop the cap every now and then to release the pressure and that's about it.

I ride with earplugs in so i don't hear the hissing unless i stop for fuel... A buddy of mine's GF has a ZX-250 which apparently whistles and makes all sorts of noise when its just sitting there and he was mentioning a forum posting somewhere with details about re-drilling the vent hole a bit bigger to reduce the "steam kettle effect".

Personnaly, i'd be really worried about metal filings from the drilling process

i'd like to know where she found a zx250? sounds bad @$$! and i don't think i'd drill either. looks like a good way to get water in the tank.

they had a helluva time finding one, apparently the 250s have been "flying off the shelves" I thought it was really funny cause they swapped the stock exhaust (and put a jet-kit in) and the new exhaust sounds rather loud at idle (makes my 14 sound kinda pathetic... maybe i should look at thoes slip-ons again) but at highway speeds the 250 sounded like a model air-plane! :)

i was just picking with you nightmare, lol. the 250's are ex250's. they're considered sport bikes. the zx250, i imagined, would be more like the 250 moto gp class. now that sounds like fun! and yes you do need different pipes. less weight and mo' powa! the sound's a nice bonus too.

My cure for the tank whistle is a tank bag - still makes the noise, but much quieter - dogs from 8 blocks away have totaly quit running up to see whats up. I have also noticed that at 10450 RPM in 4th gear at wide open throttle I am unable to hear it ( could just be the Area P pipes).
Also if you go with a tank bag, make sure you keep it full of stuff - this also helps.

It could also be a release of negative boron ions from the plasma grid collector which prevents the wobbler shafts from phase shifting into an alternate reality - ( which would cause a VERY loud noise ).
