Tank Cover Broken Bolt
04/18/21 10:18 AM

Was installing my GPR and over torques the tank cover bolt reading the directions as it needed the same torque as the other GPR bolts. Happened to make things worse trying to get it out as I wasn't able to get the pilot hole good and center.

The tank cover seems secure, is it safe to ride without the bolt in there?

How screwed am I trying to get this out? Where could I take it?

I'm sure I've ridden my 08 without that bolt in. I wouldn't want to go really fast without it though.

You probably can get it out by placing the point of a scribing tool against an edge and tapping counterclockwise with a hammer. I got a bolt out that way. It took a lot of time but it worked. You might need to cut a couple sharp edges in the bolt to set the scribing tool against.

On my 08, the tank fairing bolt has a fairly thick rubber cushion that bolt runs through. If you take the tank fairing off, you might have a quarter inch of threads sticking out and you won't have that deep well to reach down into. Grab the bolt with a vice grips and turn. It can't be too tight if the head is gone. Otherwise, cut a slot in it with a needle file and use a screwdriver. This will be 100 times easier if you remove the tank fairing. On my 08, I'd need to remove all the fairings to take the tank cover off but that would be a lot easier than fussing with elaborate measures to extract that bolt.

BTW, Welcome to the forum.

Another thing you can try if you haven't already is a reverse drill bit. I'd go with a sixteeth inch and get it started with the drill leaned as far as possible to the LH side of the bike. Tank cover removed. It might catch and spin right out. You might need to dremmel a center point for it. Delicate work. If the reverse bit doesn't take it out, you might get a hole drilled deep enough for a thin point of steel you sharpen to a point and on the edges. Pound in it and twist with a pliers. This bolt can't be that tight. I doubt the tip of the bolt is touching the bottom of the bolthole and the head is gone. It's probably barely hand tight.

Thank you! Just the person I was hoping would respond. Bike is about a month old and have been reading through a ton of your posts in this last month.

Good luck. Let us know how it's going. Taking the tank cover off might be all you need to do to grab that bolt.
