Garmin GPS Mount $7.99
03/27/11 8:38 PM

I bought this GPS mount on eBay for 7.99 shipped.

The ball fits pretty much any garmin GPS so mine snaps right on to it. I cut off the bottom part that fits on handle bars as it won't work too well with the 14. A piece of half inch cpvc pipe fits perfectly onto the the bottom after the handle bar piece is cut off. I used a little glue just to make sure it didn't come off. The cpvc pipe fits perfectly down into hole in the steering head nut. Nice and snug. It's a pretty good set up for the money.

What was the model of your Garmin? I think mine is a Nuvi 250 which isn't anything special. When I got my bike there was a threaded plug style adapter in that steering head nut which had a smaller 6mm threaded hole in the center. I cut a rectangular piece of thin stainless steel and folded it and fastened it to that adapter with a 6mm bolt. Then I could put the suction cup on the stainless piece and ran the adapter cord up through the body work to the unit from under the seat where I have a cig outlet. It's about the best place to mount your GPS because it will always be right infront of you instead of on the handlebars where it gets swiveled around, however the suction cup on mine will fail if I go over rough terrain so I have to keep an eye on it or it will be swinging by the cord. So I'm interested in this setup you got.
Where did you get this mount and what's the model number, if you don't mind me stealing your idea! :)

My Garmin is the 295W. It seems to be sort a rare model as I had a hard time finding what it was. It seems that all the Garmins have the same size ball though. Just pop the suction cup part off of the part that actually holds your GPS and pop it onto the mount you get from eBay.
Here's a link to the one I got. They're on there all the time.

Cut off the handle bar thingy, slip it into a piece of 1/2" cpvc pipe. Slip that into your steering head tube and your done.

Good luck. I'm not entirely sure that car mount will hold up to the rigors of vibration, hot sun, and other motorcycle behaviors.

When I'm bombing through the mountains with all the luggage on, going 600 or more miles that day, I don't need the GPS to come loose on me.

I have pretty much the same in my car, that mount is fine for that purpose.

What happens when it rains suddenly ?

I disagree, based on thousands of road miles with my Zumo 550. Mounted on the left clutch lever perch, angled so I can glance at it easy, it is second nature. If it was sitting in the steering stem mount, my tank bag would interfere with my view of it. Besides, I don't have to look at it until it chimes in my helmet speakers and announces a pending turn or something. The Zumo 550 blows my car's GPS away, sometimes the car gps tells me to turn after I am right on top of the intersection. The Zumo gives me plenty of warning.

Of course, mine is permanently mounted. At least the mounts are, and the wiring. I take the Zumo off when I park it in public, even though I always put a Nelson-Rigg sunshield cover on the bike. I leave the Garmin smart XM antenna mounted on the right brake lever perch, if they want it bad enough to cut the cable fine, insurance will buy a new one, and the new ones are better than what I have anyway.

I'm using my steering stem mount to hold the small aluminum rectangular box my machinist friend is making which will hold 2 BMW sockets, and two controllers (one for each socket), plus the controller for the heated handgrips. I just purchased a steering stem ram mount to which the box will be bolted.

Soon as its all done, about 3 weeks (perfect, it will be warm enough to ride by then) I'll take some pictures and post them.

I've put about 1000 miles or so on mine so far and it seems to be holding up pretty well. I'm sure the bike specific models are better but like everyone here, I have a list of goodies I want. This will put a new GPS mounst a little further down the list for now :)

Generally speaking the steering head is the best place. Evidently, it is neither possible or necessary with the way you have your bike setup. IMO, I got the luggage behind me so I don't have a tower of bags between my arms. Maybe a very small tank bag when I need it. I guess the whole GPS on a bike should be secondary anyways since it detracts from the fun and safety of the trip. Ever look down to find that button on the screen to then look up and realize how far you traveled without watching where you're going? Scarey. But then I guess if you can afford a bike specific GPS you can stop worrying about some of those things. Doubt if I ever will. Here I go preaching again lol...

My tank bag nowhere near blocks the view of mine. If you can see over your tank bag at all, it won't interfere. I even tried one that nearly touched my chin. But I declined on that one for other obvious reasons. I HAVE to have a GPS. I can't find my way to the mail box without it.
