Waited a little too long
03/27/11 9:25 PM

I knew my tires were on there last legs but had a 400 mile round trip to work, and new tires wouldn't be here before I left. I thought I would make it fine. Well, about 50 miles before I got back home I noticed the front end riding really rough. I pulled over and this is what I found.

There were about five places like this but this was the worst. I took it pretty slow the rest of the way home. Of course, when I got home I had two Pilot Roads waiting for me. I put them on today and it's a whole different ride.

About 20 years I rode my GPZ900R for almost a whole winter with both front and rear tyres looking like that, not cause I had a death wish, but because it was my only mode of transport, I couldn't afford new ones and I had to get to work somehow in order to earn the money to buy new ones. Used to have fun going across the train tracks in the rain.

Thinking about it now makes me wonder how on earth I'm still here, wouldn't dream of doing that sort of thing these days.

Yeah, I sure didn't plan on riding it that way. When I left home monday morning there was only a little cupping on the front. Lesson learned. Next time I'll have new tires sitting in the garage a little sooner.

Man, got me beat. I change before I get to the bottom of the tread now that I know how unbelievably thin a bike tire carcass is. Strong yes, but thin enough for a staple to pop through.. and really bad traction on the inner rubber which is not designed for grip at all. Good pic. Save that one for the archives

I'm one of those guys that once the tire's down to the wear indicator, tires coming off - sometimes I'll run 'em past the indicator some, but not by much......got buddies that run tires to the cords, bad idea if you like to fly!!

I had a Pirelli Strada on the back of my Futura on a long trip. Thought the tire would make it fine. One of the guys was running out of tread and decided to head back home a little earlier than planned. I left with him. My Strada had no tread groves in the center of the tire so it was hard to judge. We stopped for gas about 50 miles from home after a day of high speed cruising and this is what my tire looked like.

When I was much younger and stupider than I am now, I once rode my old shovelhead with the cords showing on the rear tire. I crossed a gravel patch at a road construction site, and as soon as that past-bald tire hit that sharp gravel - pop she went. Lucky I was going very slow and didn't take a spill. What an idiot I was back then...

We all were idiots when young, whether we admit it or not. Some of us still are.
