Suggested Tool List
03/11/16 7:33 AM

I am preparing for a trip north to Colorado, Wyoming and the Dakotas with my bike. I will be towing it with my Honda Element so I will be able to carry some support equipment. I do not have unlimited space, but want to carry some basic/might be needed tools with me. Has anyone made a list of tools that they bring on the road? Any suggestions appreciated!

How many miles do you plan on riding the bike? could mean oil changes, tire changes or just a nice clean wipedown..

Well I am not sure, but one of the reasons for putting it on a trailer is to avoid things such as tire changes and oil changes. I am thinking more emergency repair

A tire plug kit in case you get a flat. That's about all I'd take. Only emergency tool I've ever needed (and didn't have). Next would be stands but there you're already running into space problems and not really necessary if the worse thing is a flat tire. Plug and replace when able.

First do all the maintenance. Like Chrly said, how many miles you going to do? Do a bolt tightening inspection. Perform upcoming maintenance ahead of time (spark plugs, air filter, etc.). If you're tires are <50% and you're going to put thousands of miles on it, I'd consider replacing ahead of time. It's a 2007, I'd seriously consider doing some of the hose and other changes especially if you're changing elevation. You might consider replacing the battery and lights. Bleed/flush brake lines, check brake pads. Perform a chain inspection, lube/inspect throttle cables, etc.

Of course the bike's tool kit. Like Rook said, plug kit with CO2 cartridges or pump. You have a tow vehicle which is good, but then there's what you can take when you're riding.

Other things I'd consider: duct tape, zip ties of various sizes, safety wiring, basic tools, bits, and wrenches (enough to do some light work, remove some bodywork, tighten fasteners, change oil, etc.). Don't forget to bring cleaning supplies, for your visor, gear, bike, windscreen etc. Bring spare fuses and if you have other spare parts (take offs) you might consider bringing them too.

Just some ideas. I'm big on maintenance, IMO I have to be the way I ride. I have to know my bike's in tip top condition every time I throw my leg over... the world is my racetrack!

LOL if you can afford to go somewhere for that long, you should just get a second bike!

Hey Guys,
Thanks for all the input. I should have prefaced with some info about my bike. Although it is a 2007, I bought it with 4K miles and it was, and pretty much like new. I coming up on 12K miles. I just put my second set of tires on. I change the oil every 3K and check/lube the chain every 500 miles. I recently changed the coolant and will be replacing the air filter in the very near future. So yes, I will do any anticipated maintenance before I go.

Duct tape, zip ties and CO2/plug kit are excellent additions and will be added.

Does anyone have any recommendation/lessons learned for the CO2? I did a search on Amazon to include the word "Motorcycle" and saw a few. I would think that getting one with a flexible hose would be easier to use. Thanks!

I bought a couple kits and extra cartridges when a powersports dealer went out. Got a good deal on them. What's recommended is to waste a kit trying to learn how to use it so you know what to do on the side of the road. Read up on whatever kit you choose, not all of the inflator valves work very well with people reporting that as soon as the plunged the CO2 it discharged everything. For our rear tires, 4 cartridges is enough to get us to a gas station.
