New 14R, Leaking
05/02/13 10:42 AM

Picked up a 14R on Monday, took it home and parked it in the garage. It has been sitting there since.

I came home from work yesterday to find a puddle of oil under it. :(

Here it is, it's going back to the dealer as soon as this stupid rain/ice/snow garbage stops.

It's coming from the driveshaft. I have always called it the countershaft, but the dealer asked me WTF that was when I said it. "You know, where the front sprocket is mounted.", I said.

How big is the spot? Sure it's not grease from the chain looking like drops of oil or can we smell&match, we wipe the floor, pop the oil cap off, we be smelling finger then take a whiff from the clutch cover hole. They smell the same or the leak is so obvious... Huston, we have a puddle.

And that means if that chain is tight like a guitar string, never adjusted out of the crate, you load the chain or make it more tight is sit on it, then go over a bump and it shortens even more under the guide [being torn] up is check for something like that?

Either way, do not tamper with it, take a cover off, bring into the equation, etc.

Yeah, I'm not going to mess with it. It's the dealer's problem. I'm all about wrenching on my stuff, but this thing only has 25 miles on it and hasn't gone more than 60 mph.

I don't like letting someone else work on my bikes, but at the same time, I don't feel like this should take up my time.

Leaks are no extra charge....they probably put a Harley engine in it before you picked it up....., the rear servo that controls the belt drive has a seal dripping at 6 o'clock..., you can caulk it with putty and in a day it will be fine.....just warm it up and ride it like you stole it.....you have a year to replace all the used parts that came from Japan

My bet is on the valve cover. It just ran down the motor and dripped out by the countershaft sprocket. They'll tighten it down. I would insist on watching them do what ever they suggest they need to do to stop the leak.

I don't really have that kind of free time, unless they're going to tear into it when I bring it to them at closing time on Monday. If I did, I'd just fix it myself.

The only worry I have is that they just let some hack wrench on it, breaking fairing tabs, losing stuff, over tightening things, under tightening things, scuffing paint, etc. Then, after all of that, I'll bring it home and it'll still be leaking. I'm lucky that way.

I'm an anal bastard, and I expect people to treat my stuff the same way I do. Fact is, they usually don't.

I was just mentioning on another forum how rotten my luck with bikes has been. I have owned a total of 5. All but 1 of them were brand new. I have had mechanical problems right after I took them home with all except two of them.

I seriously would just give her a good look see before handing her over...it may be something REALLY SIMPLE.If you don't want to 'fix' it ...at least you can point out WHAT it is and let them do it.I understand about having a non-owner wrenching...especially with this new model.Finding it yourself and then showing them might be the least worrisome...might just avoid having to go through acrobatics with your bike in some else's hands.Who knows WHAT they might go through trying to locate this.

I remember when I bought my new 2000 Harley Heritage...I got it home....same kinda thing happened.Oil on the floor.I looked arond in the light there...and found the oil sensor was leaking around the threads...very simple 5 minute fix.I called em and told em what it was...they say.."You'll need to bring it in...and we can get to it next week"...FUC#...brand new bike one day away from the dealer.Just paid cash 17K.No way...I got some teflon tape...redid the sensor on there...never leaked again....sheesh...some of these shops...IDK.

Also took her in one time to get the rear signal lamp fixed...the bulb and such was fine. They had it TWO WEEKS....called me up..tell me..."We need to replace the wiring harness here...it's shot"...I'm like...WTF?How ya gonna argue with a pushy guy who has yer bike..."okay" I says...go ahead. Two weeks pass...I call em up.."How's she doin?"...

"Oh...she's done....couple of days ago"...("Fine" I'm thinkin..thanks a lot for the update)...I get there...start her up...back out...turn on the indicator...NUTHIN....I was so pissed I just split...just couldn't deal with talking to em again.I went home and checked the wiring inside the signal stem....yup...a hole had ground into the insulation...easily repaired.Which I did.Call me stupid...yeah....I was.But never again.

Had ANOTHER Harley up here...UltraGlide.Nice bike.I got stranded one night...had to have the tow guy bring me back....okay...battery dead.I'm thinkin..."how the hell does this happen"...no warning...nuthin.Get er home...call the dealer...he tells me basically the same thing as that other one.No way am I fallin for this shit again.I gets down there around the front of the engine...see this wire hangin loose.FUC#...what the hell?I hook it back up to where the pin connector's at....LIFE...there's LIFE!Fired back up...stayed fine the rest of the time I owned it.Friggin rectifier lead wasn't snug...fixed it no prob. These guys...they wanted to charge me an arm and a leg just to look.Amazing really.(and yes...I did check the Bat connections and charge...all was fine).

Sorry to hear you are having issue man... nothing ruins it like issue with your new fling.

On another note tho, blue ones don't have that leaking issue, just say'n ;)

Honestly I hope the dealer can take care of it quick for you so you can enjoy and not stress.

Dropped it off at the dealer tonight. They have been very helpful and are falling all over themselves to make it right. Waiting on an answer.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you that it's something really simple like a loose bolt or clamp, etc.. At any rate, they'll make it right for ya! Please keep us posted as to the outcome!
BTW, one of my riding buddies has the 2012 green like yours and wow, what a beautiful sight in the sunlight!

I haven't been able to see mine in the sunlight yet. The midwest is getting hammered with cold rainy weather lately.

I'm hoping to hear something today about my bike.

Update:

They're saying that the oil drain plug crush washer was bad. They're replacing it and the bike should be ready to go tomorrow.

I'm not totally convinced that's it. The oil filter and drain plug were the first things I checked and I swear they were bone dry. That also doesn't explain how oil ran uphill into the front sprocket area.

"doesn't explain how oil ran uphill into the front sprocket area"...wind...flowing wind.Crush washer is plausable...I think they nailed it for ya;).Happy drip free riding!

"I checked and I swear they were bone dry"...yeah...could have seemed that way.But what explains all the oil under the bike then?It was dripping down from somewhere....motor oil.

I sure hope so.

I'm a pretty skeptical guy, so I won't be at ease until the bike is in my hands and working properly.

I hear ya.When I changed my oil a week or so ago...I drained it...cleaned everything up...reinstalled the bolt.Look in the pan...shit!there's the friggin washer in there.Okay...so I tighten the bolt up...call it good...hoping.Went out about two hours later...nice silver dollar size puddle under there...and a drop coming from the bolt.Yup...had to pull it back out...install the washer...tightened er back up....all's good since.Mind you...the engine had only been run just for about 2 minutes(idle) on refill. So I wasn't like riding all over with it like that.

Same thing happened to me with my Husky; that's why the drain plug and oil filter were the first places I looked.

Crush washer could be it, but I have to say, I have never had any of my NEW bikes do that, also you might want to check your battery terminals, I was getting a "check engine" light, and I got all pissed and took it to the dealer, come to find out that the battery terminal was a little loose, not totally loose, but a little loose, that was a couple thousand miles ago, hasnt done it since ....

I'm not totally convinced that's it. The oil filter and drain plug were the first things I checked and I swear they were bone dry.

You better call and explain you took the initial look at it first thing. How could they conclude it was wet, you say dry. If they rode it, then parked it, it may drip then overnight. Like I said, your work order should say 'Leak coming from under sprocket cover = Seals/comma/senor o-rings.

Drain plug is too far forward from c/shaft sprocket seeing it's coming straight down from the sprocket area.

Are there any other crush washers in that area? The guy I talked to was the salesman; his answers seemed like he wasn't totally sure what the mechanics found, other than it was some crush washer that had a defect in it.

A crush washer is so soft, I've seen them being used over and over until they curl around the outer circle and climb up the 17mm flats... You know what I say?
