06/14/14 2:25 AM

hey you guy quick stupid question...I have my chrome clutch cover and im putting it on and using the old gasket because its like metal and seems to be in perfect condition. My question is do I just put the gasket on or do I also put like a thin silicone bead between the gasket and clutch cover. its 1:30am here in Burbank and im in the middle of doing this right now and im hoping someone is up right now to give me a quick answer. thank you in advance for any input.

hope you were wrenching slow, rick. It's 7:20 here.

You should apply a touch of sealant to the two places on the edge of the case where the upper case and the lower case adjoin. That little seam can leave a micro-crack that may leak if its not sealed up. I would think that is even more likely with a metal gasket. There probably was some sealant on those areas when you removed the gasket. Kawi ssealant is usually clear so it's hard to see.

I'm sure you're ok with reusing a metal gasket if it was in good shape. If it were a hollow collapsable one like the header gaskets, I'd say replace but a flat one should be good as new as long as it was undamaged and nice and smooth.

The bolt between 2 and 3 o'clock is teh one that should have loktite on it. The hole must be located where there is a chamber behind it so the hole goes right through. That may weep oil if it does not have some loktight on it.

"•Apply silicone sealant to the area [A] where the mating surface of the crankcase touches the clutch cover gasket.
Sealant - Liquid Gasket, TB1211F: 92104-0004
•Replace the clutch cover gasket with a new one.
•Tighten the clutch cover bolts.
?Apply a non-permanent locking agent to only one clutch
cover bolt [A] shown in figure.
Torque - Clutch Cover Bolts: 9.8 N·m (1.0 kgf·m, 87 in·lb)"

If you didn't use the sealant, I'd just try it and see if it leaks. It may not because the seam between the upper/lower cases is high above the oil level. Still lots of splashing going on down there, so it may leak slowly.

Rick, the above quote was from the Gen1 SM. I don't know if the part about the Loktite applies since the case is not the same as the 14r but if you see a seam between the upper/lower cases, I'm sure the rest applies.

thank you rook for the info. I just reused the gasket without any type of sealant. I only rode about 5 miles today and everything seems good. I will find out tomorrow when I go to the rock store . that's like a hundred mile trip. thank you very much for the info rook.

I've reused these metal gaskets on other bikes for one use and never an issue with no added sealant...
