couple months. Be careful. They'll be checking up on you. I bet they will stop you the first time they see you for no reason other than to check you out.

Hey Kruz ... aka resident Radar Detector Expert/Consultant ... I'm headed up to the Dragon this coming Thursday and was thinking about grabbing a radar detector quick as I'm getting close to the last moment. Best Buy has these three in stock:
Cobra RAD450 $118 rates 4.5/5
- Detection and separate alerts: For radar signals (X, K and Ka bands, with signal strength indicated), laser and VG-2 signals.
- Instant-On ready: Detects radar guns with “instant-on” (very fast) speed monitoring capabilities.
- LaserEye technology: Detects laser signals from both front and rear.
- Eye-Catching OLED Display: Bright white OLED display features band identification icons and numeric signal strength meter.
- Dim mode: Allows the user to dim the radar detector display enhancing night driving visibility.
- Number Of Bands: 3
- GPS Enabled: No
- Voice Alerts: Yes
- Alert: VG-2 Alert: Yes
- Radar Detection:
Laser: Yes
X-Band Radar: Yes
K-Band Radar: Yes
Escort X80 $300 rates 4.5/5
- Best Buy's specs on this one are pathetic, not stating any of the key info, even though it's over twice the Cobra above.
Escort - ESCORT iX Intelligent Long Range Radar Laser Detector $417 rates 4.6/5
- Long-range detection: Superior sensitivity on all conventional and instant-on radar bands plus maximum laser range and off-axis coverage.
- Fastest response: DSP technology and multiple laser sensors provide earliest warning of speed-monitoring threats.
- AutoLearn technology: Proprietary anti-falsing design uses the power of GPS to learn and automatically reject fixed position false alarms.
- DEFENDER database: Provides information on active red light and speed cameras throughout North America. Weekly Web-based updates ensure accurate, current information.
- Pulse Warning: No
- Number Of Bands: 3
- GPS Enabled: Yes
- VG-2 Undetectable: No
- Spectre Undetectable: No
- Voice Alerts: Yes
- Radar Detection:
Laser: Yes
X-Band Radar: Yes
K-Band Radar: Yes
Ka Wideband Radar: Yes
City/Highway Modes: Yes
POP Mode Radar Gun Detection: Yes
Do you happen to know if any of these are worth a darn?

Extrapolator, from my research, the Uniden R1/R3 gave the best performance bang for the buck, especially on Ka band, which is most of your legitimate police radar threats.
As a general rule you get what you pay for in a detector with the higher dollar units offering better filtering of false alerts, better range sensitivity and superior features like GPS lockout of bogus signals on your normal routes, ability to lockout X band signals which are mostly bogus, etc.
Here's the review on the Escort IX:
https://radartest.com/escort-ix-review.asp
As you can see, they were not impressed overall.
The original Escort Redlines were supposed to be very good and the long range king until the R1/R3 came along.

If you are trying to do this on the cheap, then I suppose any detector is better than having none at all but be forewarned, false alerts can drive you nuts and you might end up switching the dam thing off like I did with my old Beltronics unit.

G'Day Extra,
From my research and experience, two things.
1. Decide where you will require the unit to work for you.
Will you be riding on country roads, city roads or both?
I need maximum protection predominantly on country roads where the Escort Redline excels in warning very early so that is the perfect unit for me. But if I transit through city's the false alerts provided from this unit due to it's serious sensitivity are ridiculous. Therefore if you are a city rider the Redline is probably not for you. You might look at a detector that has a memory function for locking out these false alarms.
So many of these new current detectors have so many bells and whistles designed for specific situations.
It's all relative to your own requirements.
2. Don't go cheap here.
The best detector you can get for you is the best detector for you! Full stop.
You compromise the whole exercise by going cheap on this one.
How would you feel if after all the trouble of mounting and purchasing a detector, the thing is inconsistent in any way and warns you way too late if at all.
A big price to pay for saving a few dollars.
Go the best...

I agree with Yannih, this is one item you don't want to go cheap on. My recommendation is you get the R1 if you don't need the GPS lockout feature, it's sensitivity and other features are identical to the R3 but $100 cheaper.
R1 = $299
R3 = $399
Cool thing about the Uniden's are they have really good sensitivity to police radars but also good filtering of false signals. I occasionally get a K band hit from the blind spot monitoring system on Acuras and GMs but they are usually only about 15 feet away when this happens and then it goes off quickly as you separate.
The Redline by Escort is also good as Yannih mentioned.

It looks like Kruz has been able to securely mount his Uniden to all of his windscreens using just the suction cups.
This is true, I've been successful with the dual suction cups mounted to all 7 sport bikes with varying degrees of windscreen curvature, the Ducati being the most acute, without issue and I've hit some pretty hard bumps.
Clean the inside of your windshield with plain water on a paper towel, put a little spit on the cups and press them firmly against the inside of screen. If your windshield is clear, you'll see the moisture distributed evenly inside the cups.
The longer they stay on there and the hotter they get out in the sun, the stickier they seem to get and you need to peel them off.

You can see the extreme curvature of the Ducati windscreen here, no problem, just came back from a ride on this bike.

"plain water on a paper towel"...well,If it were me,I wouldn't be using ANY paper towels on the screen.Microfiber all the way...for mine anyway. Not to dispute at all. Also clean mine with Plexis.Rubbing top to bottom strokes. No swirling strokes.(after soaking screen with a microfiber cloth).Couple of minutes at least.

"They'll be checking up on you"...well...they won't recognize me on my bikes with gear. But driving my cage...yep.I think I probably will get stopped. That's okay.I get it.Course,if they run my plates on the bikes, then yeah, most likely I'll get pulled over. Can't blame em really.I can't anyway.Sa'll good.

I'd avoid paper products too but it is incredible how not scratched windscreens stay. I use microfiber towels and water and soap. Plexis is good in between baths. Or Bike Spirits. Polish with 3M scratch and swirl remover once/year or two or when I get to it.

Radar Detector Fail, but found something better....
Last weekends ride.
Right at the beginning of the canyons, we take off, 2 lanes up hill,
I split the 2 riders in front of me, zoom!
Hang off, knee down, get my lean on, come around the corner there's a cop sitting there!
Quick glance at the RD, nothing, not a peep. Maybe he's doing paperwork or something.
Nope, lights us up.
Gets 3 of 4 of us pulled over "spedexprt" (you know who you are) rides past like he
doesn't even know us.
Do you know what the speed limit is? Do you know how fast you where going?
Licence, registration, insurance.
Turns out he was timing us from point to point to measure our speed coming up
the hill.
Now for what's better then a RD, one of guys we're riding with is law enforcement, he's
a motorcycle cop.
Guy that pulled us over immediately started chumming it up with us after finding
out he was a cop.
15 minutes later after running all the paperwork, he returns.
"Alright guys, I have 3 citations, no not really, just giving you guys warnings"
Dam lucky right there.
The most agonizing part going through my head, wasn't the ticket, just the thought
of having to ride slow for the rest of the day!
So radar detector only goes so far, best bring a cop with you when you ride!

I've always had the feeling that if you are really going fast like we easily do on these bikes, a cop is going to stop you with or without radar evidence if he's doing his job. The cop's word is evidence. If you were doing 50 mph over the limit, it doesn't take a cop to argue that you deserve a reckless driving offense.

Had my first radar save early this morning. I was coming down a long hill towards a 70 mph right hand sweeper, back in the old days I'd be approaching about 90-100 but nowadays I've slowed it down a bit, so more like 80 approaching that turn. As I crested the hill I got a quick blip of Ka Band and then a few seconds later I got a full blast of it like someone was right on my tail. I started slowing and looking around but saw no one, then as I approached the corner entry, I saw the LEO in full ambush position off to the left side of the road behind a line of trees and shooting straight across the road. I was impressed it was 90 degrees off-axis and I still picked him up at about a 1/2 mile range, plenty of time to get it slowed up. Good thing he was running constant on and not instant on mode.
