I did some research and read a number of reviews on head lamps about 6 months ago ... thinking there must be something better out there than the Home Depot el cheap-O's that don't last very long ... buttons wear out, elastic dies quick, just overall poor quality. Oh, and many have different modes that I don't care anything about like strobe or red, and that force me to toggle past those modes I'm never gonna use.
I settled on the Black Diamond "Spot" model. At $30 it is probably twice the price of a big box one (think I got it for $25 or $26), but it has a nice comfortable elastic band, its button feel like quality, it tilts up and down nicely, and it's easy to toggle between spot beam and flood, but only if you want to*. It's water proof. It takes 3 AAA batteries, so I keep a little box of rechargeable AAA's and swap them out pretty often because I use the light A LOT.
* If you set the head lamp to spot beam, then turn it off and on it will stay in the spot beam mode. When it's on, you can do q quick double-click to toggle to flood, and it will stay in that mode until you double click. I only care about the spot beam, so for me it's always only 1 click to turn on and 1 click to turn off. It actually does have red and strobe modes, but those take a series of double or triple clicks or something, and again since I never use those I don't even care what it takes to turn them on!
