Well Rook, that was before o-ring days. But I used to soak the chain in 90w gear oil, then took a coat hanger, strung up the chain; let it drip dry; then installed.

The trick is to key the link(s) back to the original sprocket tooth. I could hear a chain come down the road so loud, it would over ride the exhaust. That chain would Wah-Wah every time it made a 360° on the tire turn. I'd ear that thing come down the street; that bike's chain was about as dry as an African riverbed.

That poor chain just screamed, Squid!

Thanks, Hub.

So that's your chain up there! That looks like the award winner to me.

Rook, that is the Lazy guys chain(me). I just soak it in chain wax then give it the rub down. This does not get the grease into the rollers. But it looks good.

I haven't tried this stuff before but it is mostly kerosene they say, the brother in law swears by it on his VFR, works well with the brush that comes with it. Looks like a bitch to get the brush on the chain tho.... his chain is always clean... he tried their lube as well says its not too bad....

daryle, did you use the wd40 exclusively or did you use chain lube with it?

I used WD40 as a cleaner.A local Toronto site people were raving about Dupont teflon drywax available at Lowes .I've tried it,goes on clear so I tended to overlube, was not impressed with it.I currently use Belray or Maxima wax.The Maxima is available in a small can, great for distant riding fits easily in a tank bag.Golden spectro also have a nice sized can for tank bags.

thanks for the response daryle. i quit using the maxima after i found out the wd was a great cleaner, but i need to pick up some more lube.

i've read:

1. warm chain
2. spray wd and wipe clean
3. warm chain again to remove remaining wd
4. then apply lube on inside of rollers
5. wipe off excess lube

anybody got anything to add? the above looks like it would make for excellent chain life.

using contact cleaner

Sounds risky. Does it say safe rubber ? My first thought is it may work, but don't.

We use contact cleaner at work to clean off parts including O-rings and it does a great job taking off the grease and dirt without leaving residue and doesn't ruin the rubber. I was just curious if anyone used it and noticed it take the grease from within the O-rings on the chains...I've been using WD or gear oil to clean the chain but the spray on wax doesn't seem to "grab" onto the chain as well.

i noticed the lube doesn't stick as well either after using the wd. that's why i'm going to try and heat the chain after using wd to see if the lube will stick a little better.

While on the subject of chains, just thought I would tell this little story. I pulled up along side of a couple of bikes on Monday (Holiday here in the north)It was clear to me these guys were out what was to be maybe there first ride of the season. While at a stop sign making small chat I happened to look down at their chains. They were SOAKED in lube. It was on the rims, the tires and even up into the fender. I wanted to say something but I didn't(my bad). I just noticed in all these threads no one mentions how much to put on. Thin film sound ok

yeah, you put too much on and it's just going to make a mess and you've wasted your lube. i spin the tire and spray once. after that i wipe the extra off cause it's just going to get all over the bike.

Two revolutions for me.
One sprayed from the rear of the bike, towards the rear sprocket, to lube the outside.
Another sprayed towards the floor, where you push up on the chain to check the slack, to lube the inside.
If I let the wax dry overnight, I don't get much fling. But if The wax hasn't dried, it flings quite a bit.
I keep a "poser rag" under the seat for such things. There ain't room for anything else under there!

its funny u mention that, since u brought it up and we're gonna go a little off topic, but here in ny city, i see so many people try to show off their bikes and put tire shine, that armor all crap on the tires, and u see these guys falling like pears from a tree lol,

I think I'm noticing the same thing, Reeves. I bet what is happenning is that a small amount of WD is left on the chain after the cleaning. It could be enough to thin the consitency of the wax/lube which makes it fling off more when the chain heats up during opperation. I would guess anything we use to clean the chain other than chain wax or chain lube is going to cause the same reaction.

When I'm finished with the bike I will give the chain a rub with my thumb(this tells all). With the bike on stands and in 1st gear I will use the straw that came with the chain wax and squeeze the trigger half way while pointing at a angle towards the O-Rings. The rollers get lubed by default. Once inside and once outside. Before next ride check for excess. This seems to work. What are you guys doing ?
