Nice build. I started to build a turbo GSXR 1100. Long story short, I still have everything except the stuff that needed to be fabricated (plenum and exhaust). I just put my Microsquirt EFI system on Ebay, since I got the ZX-14 now. T-3 type turbo will go up for sale next. I owe my wife some cash!

I stopped by the other day to drop off the frame. Wasnt much for a picture shoot, but I did get a close up of the exhaust on the turbo for you Romans. And he gave me another picture of the block he took a couple weeks ago.

He still wants me to try out +1 front to start.

Like you said, for different gearing the tune will need change, but we have a bunch of different sprockets laying around to play with. Im tempted to see if he will go ahead, and after tuning is done on the +1, go ahead and swap out sprockets on the dyno, and do a maps for a stock front, and a -1 front. So ill have them on hand down the road.

To say I cant wait either, would be an understatement. But at the same time I dont want to rush him. He does a lot of builds, I just had to wait until it was my turn. And now that it is, things are going quickly.

I honestly dont remember him saying we were upgrading them. I know he said new rods, but I think just OEM. I know he bought a ton of ARP stuff, so it may have ARP bolts on oem rods.

I know I did some quick research on it, and most people say 350-400, but some people(muzzy) have went as high 600 on stock rods. Either, like I said, im only shooting for 275. lol

Well, he ended up working a double on Tuesday and Wed, so he didnt make any progress. Then today when doing the final assembly, he realized the manual cam chain tensioner never showed up. So I talked to APE around 4pm, and it will be here tomorrow, got a tracking number shortly after the call. Besides that, everything else is prepped, and ready for install. Shouldnt be long now. My birthday is on the 27th, so im just hoping for a good Bday present now. lol

Not sure what you mean by springs? But APE is who I bought a manual cam chain tensioner off of. It showed up this morning, and I took it over to him.

I did take some more pics before I had to leave. This was around noon today, he said hes going to be working on it all day. Hopefully put a base map on it tomorrow, so I can put an easy couple hundred miles on it and then dyno it later next week.

15lbs? You're crazy, what kind of power are you planning on putting down? We plan on dyno tuning mine after Memorial Day, but for now the bike is home so I can button it all up, and ride it around for a week.

15lbs? You're crazy, what kind of power are you planning on putting down?

Each point of compression Down costs HP and (roughly) 1-lb of boost to make up the diff . That being said I will need over 10 to get back to where I am now. I would like to get min 330 at the wheel.

but for now the bike is home so I can button it all up, and ride it around for a week.

Are you really going to ride that bike with out a tune ??????

He did a base 6psi map for it. But even on that note, im still going to keep it out of boost, and keep it low in the RPMs. Probably wont break 5k rpms. Next week ill take it back to him to raise the boost and fine tune it. I put about 20 miles on it today, runs very smooth, and besides the exhaust, the engine is very quiet.

I have no clue, he just said its safe on the rich side.

Ill get numbers off him when I go back next week, basically see where it is now, and then obviously final numbers as well.

You make me feel like I am so out of the loop on this build. lol I try and get all the info I can off of him every time I see him, and then you manage to ask a random question I dont know. lol

and then you manage to ask a random question I dont know. lol

Important questions only, as I too now intend to go low compression like in your build. Always nice to know what each pound of boost is giving you, helps, Also, It's great to here your impressions early before you get used to it. I am very curious as to how that motor feels off boost down low. This is my biggest fear. Read lots on how low compression motors get doggy down low and then come on like a light switch ?????????????????? Look forward to your street riding impression on this. You got us into this lol Do tell.

RE: My Turbo ZX-14 Build.

Well I did do a short 20 minute ride yesterday. A lot of things have changed since the last time I rode the bike, so its kinda hard to pin point what made the differences I notice most.

Biggest thing I notice being more of kneedragger type of rider, the nose feels heavy. Almost like I lowered the bike, and the front was put 1/2 inch too low. Checked tire pressure when I got home, and it was about 31, I normally run 35, so that could be a little of it. Also, its now stretched, so that makes the front heavier, probably most of it. But stretching also raised the tail up, so the front is a little lower. So I might try raising the front up about 1/2inch. But I have feeling most of the heavy nose issue, is because its stretched.

Right now, Im trying to stay out of boost, and staying low in the rpms. So from going from a -1 front to a +1 front sprocket, and then now being stretched, it feels very calm and smooth. My buddy thats also a bigger guy like me, was on his stock 08 ZX14 was following me in case anything happened. There was one time during the ride, I dropped down to 3rd gear which brought me to about a little over 4k rpms, so I roll on it, dont hit 1/2 throttle, but still hit about 2-3lbs of boost, take that up about 2k more rpms, then let off. Very smooth, rolled out pretty nice. But with it being stretched, +1 front, stiffer rear spring, the whole experience was very calm, and didnt "feel" that fast, mind you Im paying attention to RPMS and not MPH. Get back to the house and my buddy asks how much boost and how much throttle I hit, I say about 2-3lbs, and not 1/2 throttle, and hes shocked. He said he was in 4th, and when I rolled on it, he went Wide open, and I was leaving him, so he went to 3rd, and then he was pacing me but not catching me, and then I let off. So while to me, it felt slow, and not exciting, Im also use to nitrous having that hard hit, the tail sinking down really far, and the front trying to wheelie like crazy. This was so calm and smooth, it just felt slow.

That being said, I bet when Im doing full boost, and full rpms, its still going to be a crazy fast bike. I told my buddy at the time, its like racing a 10 second cadillac compared to a 10 second civic.

As far as boost is concerned, he said he was getting into boost well under 4000 rpms, probably all the head work helped lower how soon it gets into boost. I havent tested that myself. But normal riding, stop light to stop light, it felt great. Once its fully tuned I can give you a better impression of how it comes on to boost, and more about its daily ridability, and if it feels sluggish down low or not.
