On the subject, I agree with both. Check your ego at the door but sometimes you need a kick in the butt and being pushed a little bit beyond what you think is your limits.
Back on the topic, I rather buy old and throw the kitchen sink at it. The result is a better bike in my opinion. I used to think that the ZX-14R front end was way sharper than mine although I have Ohlins internals. Light weight wheels and the 14R can't hang with me in that department.

At the end of the day we're all pushing over powered bikes without the matching skills so buy what you want, just don't hide behind TC and ABS (they are just safety blankets) and work on your skills.
